b'mouth trials
Heys guys n girls. I may sound like a bit of a pansy but im now in year 11 with exams coming up fast and i have teachers pressuring me left, right n centre to start applying for colleges and shizzle. It's all worrieing me a bit really, i'm so used to school that the whole thought of applying for college seems a bit scary for me, its all coming up so fast and im worried that if i dont sort it out soon its all going to go tits up  . Im guessing alot of the guys n girls on here have left school and stuff so basicly what im asking is how you went about deciding what you wanted to do? Like where you wanted to go and what you wanted to study. Also...is it normal for me to be feeling worried? Its just that this all seems a bit surreal (i think thats the right place to use that word) to me at the moment. Any help would be much appreciated. Cheers, Aaron :- . Bondy
Just apply to all of the colleges that interest you, as time goes on you will get more of an idea of what you want to do and will be able to make the decision of what you want to do when the time comes, ive just started college and its great, a much much better enviroment than being in school. I was a bit weary about applying for colleges and stuff when i was in year 11 and they kept going on about it all the time but its nothing to panic about really, im really glad ive left secondary school now. Or you could do GNVQs which count as a couple of GCSEs each. Then you could carry on to college. It's completely upto you.
Siders77
Flippin' hell Monkey, I thought that would have been a rant at Jim or something then! :D I see you're trying to change? More helpfulness. And to the topic starter, just phone up the college you want to apply too and most colleges are unbelievably helpful over the phone. At college it seems to be a different atmosphere, even to that of 6th form in my experience, you are treated even more as an adult and they don't pussy foot around things like they do in school such as if you're wrong your wrong, but they tell you how you've gone wrong and why you did. So you learn immediately from your mistake and don't think you were half right. Which in my opinion is loads better. College for the win. Haz
Six form is so much fun it's un-true! And I don't know about anybody else, but, there are so many good looking girls! Erm yeah, don't worry too much about your GCSEs, teachers big them up a load but so long as you pay attention and do coursework, your set. Rob_P
I know how you feel! I remember when I was in my last year of school and when GCSEs are coming up it's worrying. Just relax and take it as it comes! Also make sure you revise loads, dont leave it till the last min like I did. I still got the grades I wanted and I think you get better grades than what you expect. Some people dont revise at all and still do fine so it depends but I can sit down and revise at all, suppose that's why I didn't do alot. Applying to college isnt to bad really, luckily theres only one college where I live and it happens to be about 2 mins from my house which is good. Get outta bed 8:50, be in lesson 9:15 :D College is so much better than school, I think they respect you more because you have chosen to be there rather than having to go there and you call teachers by their first name too which is cool. They treat you more as an equal. I was quite worried about starting college for the first year but im sure everyone is when they start a new place, now in my second year and lovin it! It'll be good dont worry! You wait till you apply to uni  Rob :- :P
trials_rocks
Whatever you do at college make sure its subjects you enjoy and are interested in, instead of what is seen as the best academically. Theres no point getting crap grades in like, double maths and 2 sciences, when you could do much better in other subjects that you prefer. If your not interested in a subject you will not be arsed to put in the effort or the time for your work, resulting in grades that dont reflect your ability. Has anyone seen my shoe?
Yeah you want to apply for the best colleges that suit you. I've gone to sixth form this year and its ace. And yes the girl to boy ratio is insane and most of the girls are fit!

RicH_87
if you wanna be a mechanic best way i know is to go to a garage for year 11 work experience, then if you do well they will offer you a job at the end of it. That's what happened to me, but by the end of the two weeks i'd decided it wasn't really for me. Two of us went from the same school, and the other guy was working there full time a few weeks later. Richie
I've just left, they said the same to us its not worth applying for college they do all the enroling etc in aug. So yeah you could apply but youll just get a prospectus for 05 when you need a 06 really. If your wanting an apprentiship like myself i'd tell you to apply around feb/march. And dont worry the gcse's arnt that hard, i made the mistake of pissing about in year 10 and 11 alot lol, so dont make the same mistake lol. If your wanting to go to 6th form well my school gave people info on 6thform a month before we left so i guess that means you dont need to do anything till like june. Richie. Bluegrass
Hey Aaron, its larry by the way, ex echo rider n all that jazz. If you think you'll like the independence and can self motivate yourself, then maybe college is best for you. Brock is supposed to be quality! Bmouth/Poole college not so many good things heard there. But if you need that lil bit of school environment to give you a kick up the ass and work, like me, then 6thform would be better. People think it'll be just like school. Its not at all. I'm at St Peters, you've probs heard lots about it if you're getting info left right n centre. Its a quality 6th form, relaxed atmosphere but the teachers know what theyre on about! Unlike Winton....lol Just go to all the open days at colleges/6thforms you think you'll like. I wouldn't see you at St Peters if you came as i would have left by that time next year. Hope that helps a bit, see you around no doubt mate! b'mouth trials
Wow, new layout for posting looks awesome lol, anyways, back to my topic. Thanks alot guys, you dont realise how much of a help this is. I'm starting to get a bit more relaxed now, i was given a list of all the college open days and things today so i will definatly be attending at a few of them!! Thanks larry for explaining the difference between 6th form and college, and yes i was told it was just like school but if not thats amazing, school is getting really annoying now, soo many time-wasters. Although i am enjoying year 11, gives us a bit more space to do what we want. Also, thanks for the post (sorry, i cant remember who it was ) saying to take the subjects you enjoy, i was thinking about this today, i really dont want to get stuck in a rut where i am not enjoying college/6th form atall, because i know that if i dont enjoy it i will not put 100% effort into it. Anyway, enough of my rambaling, thanks to all, HUGE help. Keep em coming lol. Aaron.
John planet x
Find out what you wanna do in future Dont let anyone pressurize you into applying for something you dont wanna do as last resort or nout, you will regret it. Dont get too worried, i chose 1 week before everything started after my gcse's :- If you havent a clue what u wanna do, just do a levels or something, colleges or techs are more specialised in certain subjects, and there are also apprenticeships available. Good luck
