poopipe
I've got funny silver stuff on my brake pads - it looks like someones coloured them in with a pencil. My brake has become poo - which is why i checked. so, i have 2 questions 1: what is it? 2: how do i get rid without knackering my pads? I've got a shiny new Hog rim and Kool stops (i think - whatever cme on the t-pro)
Steve-A
Sand the crap off, or just drag your pad across a bit of brick wall etc till its gone. Then get some saop and water on your rim and elbow grease. Problem solved
munkee
its material (aluminum?) off the rim Edited September 14, 2005 by Spacemunkee
ScotchDave
What I find works best is to take the pads off, lay some sandpaper flat on a flat surface and to drag the pads in light circle until the glaze is gone. Once that's done put muc off on your rim and ride around dragging the brake until it starts to bite and squeal, wipe off crap on rim with a clean rag/tissue and away ye go.
Bucky
grind your rim, this metallic type deposit only happens on unground rims. :D If its your front rim and you dont want your pads to wear down like they are going out of fashion you could try this grind i have on mine, it works just as well as a full grind but dosnt seem to wear pads down at an alarming rate. Bucky ← That looks cool... Are you actually, really using that? It's a tempting idea for mine 'cos I don't want to kill my pads, but I'd rather have a brake taht worked :D I've found taking your pads off and rubbing them on a brick wall (bricks = rough = remove crap from surface) gets rid of that glaze off them, and just kitchen towel and Muck-off does rims wonders. John planet x
if you ever brushed your rimm it can leave scheissen hausen on it, (itty bitty peices of whatever the rim made of (Y) and it will just make that pencil effect. or sometimes if water n stuff has gotten on it u can get this like coating of gunk which is also like pencil crap ):D Edited September 14, 2005 by John planet x
poopipe
I dont want to grind really - i figure it cant be good for the rim - .. so, the general concensus is that i sand the pads down a bit and wash my rim. I thought it might be aluminium dust - the rim's only a week or two old so its probably just left over from manufacture. I did get the bike wet recently as well so that probably why i noticed it . nice one. thanks everyone
Mr Motivator
I've got a grind. I get it. It makes my brake better. I leave it on.
Boothy
Clean both the pads and rim with nail varnish remover or something similar, gets all the crap off them both.
