My Knees Hurt

My knees hurt the morning after I've been out riding and it's beginning to creep into my fingers as well. I put it down to being old and knackered (Ive always done sports that are bad for knees ) - but I'm wondering if anyone's got any suggestions on how to reduce the effects a bit cos its embarrassing hobbling about like a pensioner for the first half of the day...

have a nice hot bath at night after you ride maybe to warm 'em up and relax them etc.

or you could get one of them support bandage thingys and see if that helps.

orrrrrrrrr maybe have a month off trials and don't do sports just relax and stuff maybe go swimming keep you fit to give it a bit off rest from the punishment of trials

can't think of anymore suggestions lol

I had a problem with me wrists because they kept siezing up and cracking after i went riding and i just had a month off to rest them and that sorted it out and they're fine now

Try going for a serious ride, and then when you get back in, you need to freeze your knees somehow; pack them with ice or get in a freezing bath, anything to really cool them. A lot of top atheletes like Paula Radclife finish an event and then get in a bath filled with ice and water. I don't know what extremes you would be comfortable going to, but I found it really helped with my ankles which are severaly damaged.

Your other best bet is of course, take yourself to a physio and see if they can give you some advice. Also the cod liver aust suggested can really help.

i dont get too many pains in my knee's but i do get that feeling a lot where your knee feels out of position (i know i have dislocated my knee's enough) and it feels horible, usually a few days of doing as little as u can helps to sort out the problem, but streching in the morning is the best way to avoid getting those problems.

also the cod liver tablets sound like a good idea, so i might get me self a bottle of them

I had a friend who wrecked his knees riding trials, and couldn't join the fire brigade as result.

thats reassuring , thanks

i hadnt thought of freezing them - ill give that a try if the nice hot bath doesn't work (i know what i'd prefer).

I got me some ultra strength cod liver oil joint fixing tablets today as well - my mum said that was a good idea too - kuffing horrendous price though. Id rather extract it from the fish myself than pay that regularly

The freezing tightens the muscle, whereas the hot bath makes them looser, I know there's an order you're supposed to do it but I can't remember, as alot of Free Runners suffer from similar problems so they do it. Can't remember if it's hot then cold or cold then hot. Sorry for the unhelpfulness

wonder if its wise to experiment...

ill post back with results in a few days then

As there's only 2 ways to do it, and you'll only do each one once and see which has the best results I can't see it causing any major problems. Oh and the cod liver oil capsules are supposedly really good, lots of vert skaters take them because of the bails that mean they land on their knees and slide down

I suffer from achy knees but its not from actual trials riding, its from riding long distance from one spot to another which stresses them, so i try to avoid that now. I have just started taking cod liver oil capsules as im like aust, i dont want to have many problems in the future with my joints if it can be helped.

Get your GP to look at them. That way you can get them sorted ASAP, for free, by people that know exactly what their doing. They will tailor any treatment specifically for you. If its nothing to worry about, they will tell you, and you will have a definate answer.

Ummm... right. I don't know who your GP is, but mine must be crap then! I was suffering from knee pain when riding and running and I went to visit my GP - all he suggested was rest and painkillers. Now correct me if I'm wrong, but pain is your body's way of telling you to stop doing something to avoid serious damage, so if you take pain killers surely you won't know when to stop and really f**k yourself over :D

Since then, I've been to a private physio and she's told me it's all to do with my back - not my knee (apparently it's all linked....). I've had 4 sessions of treatment (at £30 a time (Y) ) but I'm now completely sorted :P She's also taught me loads of stretches to do, and how to run properly to avoid it happening again. So my advice is if you can afford it, go and see a chartered physio - even if it's just for one session. Other people might have more luck with their GP but mine was rubbish!
