Heatsink
I was waffling on about this in the happy thread and it got me thinking. We're mostly fit chap & chapesses, with trials developing upper body strength in particular: How many press-ups can you do? They have to be proper ones! munkee
just did 40 dead on i have the energy to do more but id stuggle with keeping technique and try to cheat doing any more. I usually do 20 then take a break for a minute and do another 20 etc whenever im bored and at home. No idea what the average should be? anyone doing 100+ is a machine me thinks

Tomm
The best I ever did was 36, so I put that, although now it's only about 20 (Blame it on the knackered shoulder - I'm out of practise). I bet half the people will lie and say they can do "about" 50 when they've never tried. It's a lot harder than you think. If you're doing say, 30, the first 20 or so will feel really easy, and then by the time you get to 30 your arms will be dead... Chin-ups are the man's game though :-

damo
For my job, i have to under go a BPFA which is an army fitness test basically and depends on the mood of the pti's (phisicall trainning instructors) mood. We would usually have to do press-ups for 3 mins but usually when someone drops out they add 20 seconds to the 3mins, by the end of the warm up you've done well over 100+. And thats the warm up you get absolutly beasted in circuit trainning, don't even get me started on that.

Tomm
How many full pull ups are we talking? 20+? ← Nah. I wish - My best is 15, I just can't get more than that, even after doing loads of them. That's chin-ups too, pull ups are harder.

munkee
pull ups = gayness! i broke my left arm when i was 12.. once it had healed i started to do weights to strengthen my arms.. However one small problem, i could never do as many with my left because it would hurt where it had broken. Resulting in my right arm being loads more muscly than my left. This really really really f**king annoys me especially with pull ups because one arm is fine while the other is dead only after doin 10. Same with press ups too it always dies first :- i would just do weights with my left arm but i really cant be bothered to just work one. Working out only arm at a time would be dodgy as the muscles that stabilise you when you lift would get biased towards the weak one, never a good thing. Ali C
I can do about 30 when I have the energy but I never feel comfortable in the push up position. I can do about the same pull ups, but I much prefer them. the hardcore virsion is to clap your hands when you get to the top, then catch the bar again. I can do about 5 or 6 in a row. I also did 15 of them with a full camp rucksack on........go me!
JT!
Chin-ups are the man's game though :- ← How the hell did you do push ups with our chin! (Y) Now that's hard!
Bondy
But i dont really know how to do them! (Y) ← Lie chest down with your arms out just over shoulder width apart, then when youre doing them try to look up and forward rather than looking down to the ground then when you do them the first things to be touching the floor should be your chin and you dont have to rush them either. I can do about 32, i have impingement in my shoulders which kinda stops me being able to do anymore as it hurts like mad whilst im doing them! Can anyone do a 1handed press up? now thats hard! i can do half of one :- Edited September 5, 2005 by Bondy

Joe_Elding
I've never tryed doing them until I drop but i do 20 to 1 most nights which is a lot of pressups but inbetween i do sit-ups to rest my arms. I reccomend 20-1 build stamina up soooooo much. (20 pressups 20 situps 19 pressups 19 situps 18 pressups 18 situps ........1 pressup 1 sit up sleep)
Nick Garland
I go try now probs aroud 40-60 but like someone else said I do sets of them ie 20, then rest 1 min then anothe 20 etc up to 100 not 100 without a break. Just did 62 then arms kinda die from latic acid starting to burn. Just reading a few peoples comments I agree. First 30 I would say are easy then 45 onwards get bit tougher, then towards the 60 barrier they are getting alot slower and tougher. Probs 60 would have been more accurate as the last 2 were pathetic. What is everyones definition of ap oerp pressup, mine is that arms are flat. IE hands on ground elbow at say 75-80' so your bicep/tricep are almost flat ifnot flat. depends on peoples arm builds whether their arms get flat or not. -RoBBo-
One-handed pull-ups is where it's at :- Normally about 100 pressups is pretty easy for me lol...quick warm up before a workout.
chrishayton
used to do them quite often can do 40 then 30 second break , then repeat twice so works out at 120 . i put 40 - 50 on the vote though, i usually do elevated ones though which are harder and better . this is when your feet are on a chair or something.
