You installed all the drivers and stuff?

Yes a Firewie cable will work, so long as you have the drivers, if it driver free hardware, you need a capture program.

I also have a question that can be answered here.

I have recently got a Sony DV Cam (TRV 18e) and need to get a firewire cable to connect it to my mac. Looked on ebay, and noticed there are 6-pin and 4-pin variants. What do I need, and how can I tell which ones i need.

If you'll be using the camera for webcam and whatnot, go for USB, and you'll need the drivers from here; http://esupport.sony.com/perl/select-syste...VER&PRODTYPE=37

If you want to capture footage at any sort of decent quality, get yourself a firewire card and cable, from dabs.com or the like. (Y) You shouldn't need any sort of drivers for that, plug and play baby.

You can use either, 6 pin, however, will support daisy chaining, which your camera wont. Daisy chaining is using 1 firewire to link multiple items, so the cable continues, for example I have;

iPod --into--> Lacie External HD --into--> My Mac, so i always have a port free.

Go for a 4 pin and you will be fine. (Y) If you ever plan on daisy chaining, go 6 pin.
