As the bike has a 6 speed manual gear box i asume that the CBT needs to be taken on a geared bike, does anyone one know of any good insurers and know the rough cost ? any help is appriciated, any of any other needs gaz.... Simon
Get a car you ned ← Basically. The bike will be all shits and giggles until you want a car to go to rides to and take friends out and such like, then you have a motorbike and cant afford a car for ages because of all the money spent on the bike. Be patient, save all your money until your 17, and spend it on a car. Also, if its 6 speed, won't it be stupidly expensive to insure for a first bike?
Mark W
No? There was another manufacturer who made a similar bike with a 7-speed box. That's kinda irrelevant to insurance grouping, in the same way it is on cars really. Carole Nash gave my Mum the best quote. If you wanted a 'bigger' bike or a more sound investment for the future, you *could* get, say, a 600 then have it restricted to 33Bhp for the mandatory time period, then have it derestricted, thus meaning you don't have to buy a new bike once you're allowed to go nuts on it? I know a car is nothing like a bike, but for instance, 2nd gear is already 20/30mph. Sorry, i was just trying to add something relevant to my post, otherwise i will get told off.
Mark W
Hehe, fair enough. Either way, gears are irrelevant to insurance grouping, pretty much. It's the engine size that's important. For example, you might have a 980cc car with a 5-speed box. That might do, say, 30mph in 2nd. You have a 2l sports car or something. That might do 70mph in 2nd. Engine capacity is the important thing. That Aprilia's only a 50, so it's unlikely to break any land speed records
Dai the Socket
You can't have anything bigger than a moped (50 cc) at 16 anyway, and the 33bhp restriction is for people who have passed their Cat 1 test, which you've gotta be atleast 17 for i believe. I'm getting an RS 125 soon, looking at one I got on eBay in a week. Everyone says 'oh just get a car blah blah' but I like motorbikes, and I want one. I wona be bale to get around whenever I want, with cheap insurance, and get places fast. I'm not fussed about a bit of rain now and again, that's what jackets are for  I can't wait until I get mine. Got my CBT in a couple of weeks, but i'm not 17 until November the 2nd. Insurance in my area for a RS 125 is ~£400-520 for a year. For a 50, I could guesstimate it'll be between £320 and £420, depending on your area etc.
Mark W
I really wanted to get a motorbike too, but then I realised that for 99% of my journeys, it'd be useless. I play bass in a couple of bands, so I'd need to be able to haul round a 4x10 cab, a 350W amp head, 2 basses and all the excess shit like that, and I'd be driving places to ride, pick up shopping, etc. Cars just work out better for me, which is why I'm currently learning now. I'm just hoping to get a bike when I'm older, which also means the insurance should be a little more forgiving
Tony Harrison
Waste of money. Look in the free-ad papers for a Honda CG125, or a 125 Yamaha. Those race-rep 50cc bikes are a bit shitty and just aren't worth the money when you'll want something faster or a car within a year or two. The Honda especially is a dead nice bike and they're easy to work on. Oh, and you'll only pay a few hundred quid for a really nice one... Richie
Motorcycle direct are the cheapest my quote for a rs125 as im 17 in a week was 390 a year third party which aint to bad.
Roeman
I had a 50cc in Guernsey when i was 14 beacuse you can have 50cc's at 14 over here, it was 300 fully comp. What ever you do dont buy a performance exhaust they sound gay. Out of a rs you should get bout 55-60 flat out if you have a long road and a tail wind. Have fun with yout 50, dont be too dissapointed when it doesnt, really go that fast!

Your best bet is to ring carol nash, there the cheapest. For my first year I had a yamaha TZR 50, feggin quality bike. Bought that brand spanking for £2750 which was a bit of a mistake really, o well when i traded it in for my current bike I lost £1000 on it. It was £650 a year to insure third party fire and theft, that was with bennets. No? There was another manufacturer who made a similar bike with a 7-speed box. That's kinda irrelevant to insurance grouping, in the same way it is on cars really. ← the only 7 speed bike I can think of is the caviga mito Yeah, but i mean if theres gears, it will probably go quite fast? Sorry, i was just trying to add something relevant to my post, otherwise i will get told off. (Y) ← lol umm geared bikes tend to be a lil faster than the ol twist and crawls but not ALOT faster, you just rag it in every gear and just dont go anywhere! andyroo
Its not engine size that makes the biggest difference to insurance, but desireablility. For example, I can get insured on a 2 litre turbo 307, but not on a 1.6 mazda mx5, because the mx5 is more desireable. So for cheap insurance you want to get something that chavs dont like. If chavs like them, car or motorbike, chances are the insurance will be very high on them. Another reason to hate chavs (Y)
Simpson
Motorcycle direct are the cheapest my quote for a rs125 as im 17 in a week was 390 a year third party which aint to bad. ← a insurance company isn't bothered about the price of YOUR bike, most superbikes can be brouht 2nd hand for £5,000 is nothing, they take the risk that you dont crash into a 100,000 aston martin or something that they'd have to pay out for. You dont need an aprilla S, the engines die every year if you use top call oil an about 6months with cheap oil, so the maintenance for a race bike is sill especially wen it still only goes at 35 if its legal, an if it aint your insureance is void DOH! I got a honda Sky for £180 brought two before for £450 and £550 so bargin, only gonna gain money wen i sell it to get a 125 when im
