Ali C
as some of you might know, I got a yamaha ty175 a couple of months back for cheap off ebay. The bike was a non runner and I have been trying to get it running. The bike didnt have a woodruough key, so I have gotten a new one, also the gaskets on the engine were shot, so they have been replaced. I am having to bump start it as the kickstart is f**ked (gonna weld it on). today it actually got running a few times but it back fire really badly and doesnt tick over. I might take it to a local bike shop, but I can imagian it will be exspensive. So if any of you guys knows about this stuff, I would love to hear your opinions. Ali C
done, done I recken it might be somthing to do with the timing, but I have no idea how to adjust that
Simpson
If its mis-firing its means that there is an air leek somewhere says my dad! and he knows everything, (ford boss engineer calibration thing) It could also mean that the bikes calibration is wrong, so the pistons arn't running in time, best cart it down to a bike shop, they can plug it into a computer which will tell you any fault any where.good luck
Lawnmowerman
Its not a modern bike is it? if it is the CDI is probably dead.

Todge
I have a ty175 that i use occasionally here. Been bored out to 210cc and was rather fun, but no way could you ride "trials" on it. Problem is it weighs a fair bit, the brakes >_< drums dont lock ;) suspension is hard etc. Used to have to have smaller rear shocks and a clutch lightener thing to be able to ride it (Y) My dad made a trials bike to tag along, built the frame up, forks etc and put a ducati 250 engine in it. Sounds soooo nice and smells good too (Y)
Ali C
nope, its not a new bike (1985 :)" ) its seen better days. The front drum doesnt work (gonna fettile with it) and my friend broke the lever, so I am gonna stick some mtb ones on (moto style levers though). The back drum brake works awesome though, only needs a light tap to lock. The shocks are a little too soft and over sprung, but I can live with it. Thanks for the comments guys
aaron_trials _247
If its mis-firing its means that there is an air leek somewhere says my dad! and he knows everything, (ford boss engineer calibration thing) It could also mean that the bikes calibration is wrong, so the pistons arn't running in time, best cart it down to a bike shop, they can plug it into a computer which will tell you any fault any where.good luck ← im pretty sure that they are only single cyclindfer engines which would mean that there is only 1 piston so it couldnt be out of time with others lol mug DAN
Matt_Tupman
Yep it does sound like you timing is off Ali. Take off your flywheel casing and flywheel so that you are now looking at the ignition system. There will be 3/4 philips screws holding this on, losen them a bit so that you can move the system to either advance or retard the timing. But befor you do this mark the original position with some tipex so that you know the systems orginal position. Now because i can't hear the bike i don't know weather there timing is to far advanced or retarded, so you will have to use a bit of trial and error. When moving the ignition system only move it by 2-3mm at a time in either direction so not to get lost and to end up in an either worse position. Keep doing this until you find it running smoothest really, and make sure you have that flywheel tight as a broken woodrough key and thus crank would cost you a lot of money. While your there it may be a good idea to change the pionts and condenser (i'll get a picture for you) as a poor electronic conection could also be your problem. Also as said above an air leak around your inlet manifold could be partly due to the poor running but not solely. Thats all i can think of for now but i'll update if i have any more info that may help. If your still having problems call my dad on 07703357260, he owns a trials bike shop that specialises in twinshockers and he also has over 20 years experience with TYs. hope this gets you up and running if you have anymore question just ask :) matt
Ali C
cheers, thats really helpful :) I think the carb needs some adjustment too, its drinking petrol like a fish, I think it has a leak somewhere or is putting too much petrol into the cylinder (hence all the smoke). That might be why it hasnt got much power when it does run too.
trialsking 55
if its backfiring check the air filter isn't damp or really dirty.
