Dan6061
Just been watching the RoadTrip vid, and It got me thinking, How come when you gap, you near enough manage to get exactly where you want to? You always seem to do the right thing to get you to where you want to go. So say you wanted to gap from one side of a railway line to the other side, you would put in the perfect kick of the pedals, and pull up exactly right etc, to get to the other rail. But how do we manage to do this near enough perfectly without thinking about it? Luck? Skill? Or just knowing how much power you need to put in? :( Confused... Mark W
Same as how you can throw a ball, move your hand out and pick something up - depth perception, and a shitload of practise. You couldn't always gap to wherever you wanted to go - it's just practise so your body knows how to do it. It still is a bit of a mindf**k though :(
Dan6061
^^ exactly, I know you don't always make a gap, but yeah...still A mindf**k..

Bucky
Chubbs(Happy Gilmore) It's All In The Hips!, It's All In The Hips. dunno its just something you learn. you saying things like 3 ft to rail way line but thats easy. its when you start bunnyhopping and doing 10ft+ gaps to rails ledges etc.

Andy Vox
Isn't it less to do with the power you kick and more to do with your legs, you plant your back wheel down in the right place when you extend your legs. Thats why people who have been riding longer are smoother because they get the right amount of kick so they dont have to force it down as much with there legs therefore making it sound alot smoother, but when you first start you force the back wheel down loads because you cant get the kick correct. Also muscle memory helps you get the right amount of kick for the gap on an unconscious level. Thats what i think anyway, it might be a pile of tripe, should probably have left it to someone with more knowledge, but ah well. :( Andy Oh yeah, that gap looks so good. spangler
I'd say it's in the legs. Tuck up and place the back wheel down where you want to land. the more you compress at the start the more spring/time you can get to tuck + extend ready for the landing. its like the bike is an extension of your body, you make it go where its told. like when your brain tells you hand to pick your nose, you normally make it to your hole without hitting the person behind you in the eyeball
trialsguru
if anyones really really interested in this sort of thing look up schmitt's schema theory and motor programmes should explain everything
ghosts_cloak
Hi, As Im new to trials (Well 6 year absence and I wasnt very good last time anyway!) I was wondering this as well. The things people have said make sense, practise, practise and depth perception / coordination. I cant wait to start practising! ~Gaz
Simon
And also, when gapping up, like Bucky is, you can hit the edge smack on target without the tyre gliding right over the top or completly missing it. The wonders of the human body and mind.
Davetrials
That is huge, I walked through that gap about 15 mins ago and was thinking it looked huge. ← Rossi has 3 pedal'd it, thats a bunny hop. Why doesent this "put your bike in the right" place work for posts?
