matheprat
I was riding for about 4 1/2 or 5 hours, and in that time my hub skipped about 10 times. What can I do to stop it? Are the XT hubs servicable? Will just cleaning it out and re-greasing it make it work better? Or is it time to get a new wheel? Cheers, Mat
shovel
hi, it will be the drive mechanism for the hub which is called the freehub body that will be knackered on a shimano xt hub it is very easy to remove, firstly remove the axle with a combination of 17mm and 15mm cone spanners, then remove all the bearings from either side since they'll fall out anyway next take a 10mm allen key and unscrew the bolt that holds the freehub body (bit that the cassette slides on to) and the freehub body should just slide off take this part down to your local bikeshop and they can sort you out with a new one, for an xt one it costs about £30 and its reccomended that you replace the hub bearings at the same time so a packet of 1/4 inch bearings is what you need and they'll cost about 50p to reassemble the hub, slot on the new freehub body, screw the bolt back on with your 10mm allen key, insert the new bearings into the bearing races at both sides of the hub with some fresh grease, its usually 9 bearings per side on a rear hub, then finally reinsert the axle, adjust the cones so there is no binding or play in the axle and your done alternatively the bike shop could do it for you which will cost about £10 in labour
Fishwog
New wheel :( Shimano hubs are not designed in ANY way to take the stress of trials use. Get a Hope hub, or if you can afford to a profile or chris king.

shovel
yeah i suppose all of that time wasted faffing about with a shimano hub is a bit useless as it will just happen again and again . . . . .when you could just save your pennies and get a king
CurtisRider
its weird, i never had a problem witn my deore or my xt.....the only reason they were replaced was due to whole new wheels-the deore got to the point where the freehub body bearings were wobbling yet it still worked fine :D it was 3 years old and had taken looooads of shit, then again i still havent broken a hope yet :( id still get a hope hub due to better quality overall and when it all goes tits up, the aftersales service is topnotch :(
