Mr Motivator
The new surleys are now cast and not CNCed. The springs no longer rip out inside anymore. You shouldn't even need to do it that tight to break it anyway. Get a new one.
tipsy Jock
shimano tiagra for life. they are THE shit. ← Amen. Its a strange kind of tensioner, has a strong spring, two wheels and a cage to keep the chain in the right place. AND OH MY GODZZ you can even change gear if your that way inclined :ermm:"

James_Porter
fresh products tensioner, propper beasty and best design i have seen and for £28 its cheaper than a lot of the others. i have mine sat next to me right now, was going to put it on yesturday but as it turned out my chain is fine without any tension. www.freshproducts.co.uk
Heatsink
There was a recent post asking the same thing - Here's some good info for you! http://www.trials-forum.co.uk/forum/index....ndpost&p=720187 Rohloff's as I discussed in the above link, are £50 which is very expensive! I believe Aire Valley Cycles stock them. On the Fresh products tensioner, more info is on its way because Aaron's working on his website at the moment. I hope he makes it work in Firefox too very soon! I managed to find this image of the Fresh products tensioner though, £28: As you can see it's a springless design around an aluminium arm with the chain running in an acetal roller and the arm position adjusted via a bolt against the rear mech hanger. JIX
I would say get a descent mech and lock it out and lock it in position over your sprocket. I prefer a mech for a few reasons 1. They are sprung, so they take up the slack automatically and apply the right tension. 2. They have jockey wheels rather than a roller. I like jockey wheels better as the chain engages with them and rolls over them smoothly so you dont feel any thing at the pedals. When I had a roller style tensioner I could feel every link going over the roller at the pedals. I didnt really like this as it didnt feel very smooth. 3. Mechs are cheaper and also more available as in, every bike shop has them. My 2 pence
peter l
make something like that, thats a super rough version however, i can land on it time after mtime and it just flexes abit then pops back to normal, tension is perfect, just drill lots of holes to put the axle. If anything does break, it takes nothing to replace it. have fun with it
MadManMike
Surley Singleator The newer ones are stronger, better design and springs. Mine's been going for over a year, NEVER had any problems

butcha87
The top hole is where your skewer goes through. The lower hole (elongated for adjustability), the bolt in that goes into your mech hanger.
dave33
so what happens when you land on the chain with the fresh one? does it just snap the tensioner off or bend it ?
James_Porter
so what happens when you land on the chain with the fresh one? does it just snap the tensioner off or bend it ? ← you would have to put some right force through it to bend it, it will just push the adjusting bolt and then you will just need a 4mm allen key to adjust it again. you would have to hit it really hard to do that though. Todge
It takes a proper beating. If you land on it, it wont break, it wont break your mech hanger and it will usually stay in place. If you land on it proper proper hard, it may slip on the groove, but its easy enough to re-tighten it where required. Raub - Yes, they are available, but only in the silver finish as seen. The site is working properly again now.
