Tomm
Do you keep the clutch down while you go from whatever forward gear you were in to reverse? ← Yeah, I wouldn't double declutch out of habit. plumby2
Haha this topic has made me laugh so much clealrly so many people who race on the open roads..twats the lot of you. Mad man mike, the rallye will not do 0-60 in under 7 but with a few well chosen breathing mods will be doing that, the gti also does under 7 as standard (yes pug list it as 7.2 but look at the saxo vts this does 6.8 and this is becuase pug ran it with a full tank of fuel and passangers to keep the insurace group lower and the 106 being on 50kg heavyer aint gonna make .4 of a second differece. Bonney...there is a point in any wheel drive cars as (for examplein FWD) done quick enough stops the back from un-weighting and therefor losing grip... so better traction however no need at all to use it on the road, Syncros wearing out haha i worked as a mechanic for a while now and my god they may wear out but not for agessssssss we had only one car in where the syncro had gone and it had 260,000 miles on it haha. butcha...yup as a gti owner i can confium the handeling is second to none (well except big money cars, only in the dry though 4wd would piss all over it in wet but as i have stated before i would much prefrer fwd or rwd in dry all 4wd is good for is wet and launches) especially when lowered a sutible amount (no more than 35mm at maximum) and not done on just springs (for front defo use full set-up) and certainly when just done through clicks on the torsion bar at the back (plzzz people when lowing these do it the proper way and take the torsion bar right out) As for the person who said superchargers/turbos = pointless mate learn your facts before you chat shit like that if you put enough work into it a supercharger or a turbo Gti will piss all over alot of higher priced cars around the track e.g my mates Supercharged VTR (yes saxo and minus 8V but same thing kinda)will whip any standard scooby round a track. Fun is not in a straight line... Edited August 24, 2005 by plumby2
Mr Dave
tomm - i duno what year your polo is, but my mk2 where the revese is next to 1st and you have to push the gear lever down, u have to push it down wel hard to stop the crunching, or push to the left whisllt going into reverse, hard to explaine and might be diff on yours, but thats how mine was. plumby????? gear syncros never going ??? (Y) im no mechanic, but im sure some gearboxes go much more than others, my 306 (98) the 2nd gear syncro went few weeks ago. 78 k Dave Edited August 24, 2005 by Mr Dave
JTM
While we're on the subject of driving techniques, is there anything I can do to prevent horrible gearbox grind when I put the car in reverse? If the revs are even slightly above idle, the gearbox crunches as I move the stick into reverse. I don't understand. No syncromesh for reverse? PS It's a Polo 1.6 manual (Y) ← Gearbo syncros take a hell of a beating, especially if a woman has been driving the car (Y) And to confirm what prawn said, the legenday syncro on my escorts 3rd gear is a load of shit, therefore i blip
JTM
While were on about techniques, does anyone use engine braking more than foot braking? Ive basically been told this does no harm what so ever, as long as you dont whack it in 2nd doing 90mph. Nick?

Janson
clutch down, drop a gear or two depending on speed, release clutch slowly. car will slow down because engine will be forced to rev up due to the lower speed but similar wheel speed. and because the engine is stubborn and angry, the wheels will be slowed down. ish. Fishwog
En-jin bray-king? (Y) i.e. explain what that means ← Basically, Engine braking is the act of using the energy-requiring compression stroke of the internal combustion engine to dissipate energy and slow down a vehicle. Compression brakes is a common legal term for the same mechanism. Large trucks use a device called a jake brake to increase the effectiveness of engine braking. Fun is not in a straight line... ← who exactly are you talking about when you say racing on the roads? many people do drive stupidly fast, ill agree, but the stupid thing about it is, that most of them dont know just HOW fast tehy can go..... tehy dont know if there 2mph from the limit, or 20mph from the limit.... whether thats the limit of their capability or the physical limit of their car is unimportant.... if you know where your own limits are, and the limits of the car, then driving quickly, (with consideration to other traffic, and possible hazzards that could be ahead) whilst remaining well within those limits, is perfectly reasonable in my opinion.... i often have this arguement with my mum.... she going quickly is dangerous, but only because SHE cant do it.... as for synchros, as i said, its not a problem on modern cars, but look back 10 years or more at fords, and most things from the austin rover group, and there are BIG problems older escorts ALWAYS loose the 3rd gear synchro by about 60k, and you find me a mini box thats done more than 30k hard use without synchro problems going into 3rd gear.... if you dont drive quickly on the roads, whats the point in owning a GTI? John: yea, i use engine braking a lot.... if i dont need to slow down so much into a corner ill just double de-clutch down a gear and let the revs drop down to the desired speed for the corner.... doesnt do any real harm, although over revving it will never help. its FAR nicer to do with a close ratio gearset like mine, as the next gear above or below is always pretty close, i can happily stick the mini into 2nd at 70mph without worrying about it.... this thread is getting annoying.... plumby2
right prwan to answer your questions: I own a 106 gti soon to be on throttle bodys becuase i enjoy racing but not on the road, it costs near enough nothing to enter a track day soo keep the racing to that not on public roads where others can and will be hurt. as for driving stupidly fast yes i agree i dont stick to speed limits but do not take the piss with them, i mean driving past a school at 90 thats just stupid but i see no harm in sitting at 100 on a motorway at 2am with no1 to hurt but your self, take your own life into your hands but not others. as for syncros i was refering to modern cars e.g the S2 rallye when voicing that oppinion

JTM
Nick Im quite intrested in this whole airstrip/track day thing for when I get my new car. If I were to go to a track day it would probably have to be a technical track to exploit my car to the max. Ie. its not the fastest car top end but will be alot of fun lower down. What sort of days can you attend? What license's do you need? Helmet? Etc etc. Im excited lol
Prawny Baby
well john, my advice is to find about where the circuits near you are, there must be several up in your part of the world! call them up, and ask for a list of fixtures! there will be many car specific days, along with 'run what you brung' type days open to anyone! i know combe will send a free brochure and fixtures list to anyone who calls up and asks! for example, at the miniworld action day at castle combe, 15mins of track time costs you £25 although i wouldnt reccomend combe for you, as its probably MILES away, and its a pretty fast circuit! as for air strips, its a case of find them, find out of they have restricted access, and go drive if tehy dont! i know for a fact that the topgear test track isnt restricted, a mate of mine at plymouth uni lives in guilford, 5 mins from the studios, and says he has been on the TG track MANY times, you can just drive on and do what you like! as regards equipment, the regs for castle combe state that you must wear a helmet (which you can rent at the track) and must have full length trousers and shirts. and your cars exhaust must not exceed 105DB (could be at 5000rpm-not sure about that one)! not that many will.... ask around, even look in yellow pages! plumby2
best way to find aout about track days is to use specific cas forums (e.g a ford forum if you onw a ford as they will tend to book days for ford only etc) and as prawn said ring up your local tracks and find out dates etc, i try to stear away from airstrips as they tend to rise through tires in no time, which is a big dent on my ever shrinking bank account. hmmm very intersting about the top gear test track never knew that will have to look into it. And agin as prawn said most places will require you to helmet up, some dont but always a safe be to take one with you. tipsy Jock
Yer but its not as good, as it all has to turn backwards if you get what I mean. To stop it, double clutch (foot down, foot off then foot down) and change into reverse. Or move the stick across, wait a second then fully into gear. ← I have to do that with my Polo, Think its just a polo thing. I'm used to it now anyways so its kinda second nature.
