Luke_bradley
Just built myself a new bike up, and have ordered a wider rim. The only thing left for me to do now is to sort my gears and mech and shifter out. At the moment i have got an xt hum with a 7 speed cassette. I know i need a short arm mech and i've seen trials gears but i dont know what to get. What do you thing i should get. I am willing to spend about £50. Cheers, Luke :P
mad_gavo
just go for something fairly cheap like shimano tigra or sora short cages they do the job and you dont cry too much if you hit them :P there about £15-£18 from most bike shops As for the cassete just go for something with a range from bout 21t to 12t then you have a nice range of gears at a reasonable weight. again shimano sora, tigra and 105 are good bets and can be got in 7, 8, and 9 speed i belive and are about £18 So you can get a good setup for about £40 :) just add a thin KMC kool chain and your away :) Hope that helped Gavin
Janson
tiagra is the shit. tiagra mech, random cogs and spacers of different sizes, and a 90's style thumb shifter is the way to go. fully comp legal in every country, easy to shift, easy to fine tune mech because of the friction shifter, so if you get a minor knock on the mech you can just compensate at the lever. also looks awsomely pimp with a big black thumbshifter on the bar. MikeWarner
I've just bought a load of Sram stuff. One reason for this is that the low end stuff is much lighter than the equivalent Shimano stuff. The rear mech is mostly made of a resin plastic so should bounce back after knocks. The 8 speed roadie cassette (23-12) is very light compared to a shimano one and looks stunning quality. The shifter is a 2 trigger type, but it uses a 1:1 shift ratio making changes smoother and adjustment more acurate. The rear mech, cassette and shifter came in at under £60 the lot, so items are cheap to replace. I have yet to fit it all, so I'll update with performance at a later date, but from what I've read, it should be really good. Oh - and it is a bit different to the usual Shitmano stuff people use. :P Edited August 18, 2005 by MikeWarner
JIX
Do you enter national comps, or will do in the future?? If no I would go single speed, unless you really want gears? I hate my gears and they are so much more hassel than they are worth. If I were you I would get a gusset thick chainring, then a gusset single speed sprocket on the back, and a thick kool chain. Then buy a tigra mech, space the jockey wheels out a little bit with some washers (for the chain), lock it out, and then line it up and lock it in place with a short pice of cable. Then you will be laughing. :P I really want to do this again.
Lawnmowerman
Sora mech, 105 cassette and an alivio shifter. They work a beast on my jump bike
matthewholdsworth
go for a tiagra/sora/105/ultegra/dura-ace rear mech they are short cage and have a tighter spring to give them more tension, i use tiagra, it is better than the sora because the cable is held in with an anllen bolt not a 9mm nut thingy (much nices and easier to sort when out on a ride)

I run a sora mech, 8 speed cassette starting at 25 tooth going down in 2's and XT shifter. Don't spend loads cos you will break it. I have already broken 2 mechs and a shifter. Go wiith cheap and cheerful. H

_skj0lsvik_
Shimano 105 short cage mech, shitty cassette and a Shimano XT deore shifter (Y) Works brilliant : )
N.Wood
On the trials bike: Tiagra mech, King Kog + Hyperglide cogs, KMC Thin, XTR cabling, Sram Rocket/Attack shifter. On the 4X bike: Sora mech, Sora cassette, XT cabling, XT shifter, PC99 chain. Cheaper is better usually... Well, for the avarage rider anyways. If you wanna ride like Vince, you will need to buy a 330 Euro Tigo/Try-All mech.
Koxx_TryAll
Well i'd go for a Shimano Rx100 Mech. Well that's what i use. I Made my own single speed kit. You should do the same. Nick
