Hobnobs
Alright then. My dad needs a new gaming pc for his den type thing, and doesnt really know what sort of bits he should buy. We can build it up n stuff, but just need a list of parts we can get which are good with only gaming in mind. He doesnt have loads to spend (max 400 quid) so if someone could bosh up a list of components from ebuyer it would be very much appreciated. Cheers. tank_rider
dammit just typed out a long reply but lost it :@ are you looking for everything for a main tower i.e the case and everything, or are you going to re-use any bits from another rig? will you be confident to overclock and softmod any componants you get e.g processor and gfx card? these things greatly affect the speed of the rig you will end up with and the best componants to go for. Hobnobs
We can reuse bits, but i recon a whole new build is probably better, the stuff weve got is very dusty and a bit crap. I dont really want to overclock anything, as ive never done it before, but if it would significantly increase the performance, then i could give it a go? Dan6061
Just out of interest, what is 'overclocking' and how do you do it? :-

Hobnobs
*Sigh* It doesnt have to a real gaming pc, just more gaming orientated. Ie. fairly good graphics card rather than piles of ram.
MadManMike
Go to your local PC shop, i.e KC Computers (NOT PC WORLD IN BEXHILL) And ask them, tell them your budget, I can guarantee they'll get you something. More than likely they'd say £500 for it otherwise, unless you say "I have £400".
Hobnobs
Yeah, we were thinking of doing that, just would be easier if we had a spec we could get cheaper. I worked in KC for work experience and i wouldnt say they have the cheapest stuff around.
MadManMike
You can bargain with 'em though... I got £10 off for buying two USB Mem. Sticks :P

Maybe try some of ATi's older gfx cards. Just pm me with what you want to do, and i'll look up some stuff for you :P
tank_rider
i'd recommend the following AMD Athlon 64 3000+ Venice Core ASUS A8N motherboard 1GB PC3200 OCZ RAM (2x512MB sticks) (probably value series, maybe premier at a push) NVidia 6800 or 6800LE 80GB (or more) seagate 7200.7 or better hard drive Tagan, Antec, Enermax, Thermaltake or similarly good quality 380Watt minimum PSU You should be able to get that little lot for around the price your looking for. Overclocking should be fairly simple, you'll find quite a few guides on the net. The Venice cores overclock very well, and the 6800 or 6800LE gfx cards can usually have most if not all the rendering pipelines and vertex shaders unlocked giving very good value for money for the performance. Hobnobs
Cheers andy, that was exactly what i needed :(
RicH_87
maybe help you out on the RAM: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/CORSAIR-1GB-PC3200-D...1QQcmdZViewItem pretty cheap for what you get, and good performance. :(
tank_rider
the thing to bear in mind when buying RAM for an AMD based system is the CL number. The lower the better, most value RAm uses CL3 timings, the OCZ premier RAM i use is CL2.5, and expensive stuff is CL2. If you plan to overclock at all (and if you get a vanice cored A64 i urge you to) then you will want to spend a little more and get something other than value RAM. heres a quick spec off ebuyer, slightly over budget and doesnt include a case or PSU which would be another £50-£70. You could drop down to a 6600GT graphics card and save a bit, and maybe a cheaper motherboard, but dont go too cheap else youll not be able to overclock much.
