Switching...

I currently ride an onza t-rex and after having a go on quite a few different mod bikes lately (monty and zoo) i am considering getting a 20" bike in the future (not just yet though). I find them so much fun to ride and you can throw them about so easily, i find static 360 hops effortless on them. I was just wondering, do people see benefits in their riding from switching between mod and stock every year or so? I noticed that matt staples used to switch from stock to mod and vice versa and after the change he seemed to be better. I would use the 20" to improve my sidehops and gaps which hopefully would transfer to stock afterwards. So overall, do people see certain aspects of their riding get better from switching bikes every so often? Any light on the subject would be much appreciated.

Its always going to be an interesting topic; Ot Pi, Ben Savage, Kurt Brain and many others all went from strength to strength after changing what they rode but that doesn't mean it'll make all of us better. It affects different people different ways. Alex Pavlou (one of the Taunton riders) recently purchased a Zoo Pitbull (now replaced with a Kot MS2) after riding mod for about a year and has taken to it like a duck to water. The bugger can almost tap as high as I can now! But then someone like Sam Wheeler, unbelieveable on Mod, rides at the worlds and everything, looks rather spasticated on a stock (no offence Sam :P ). Some people can, some can't, but if you've got the money and fancy giving it ago, go for it, in most cases peoples riding generally changes for the better. You'll just get rather a lot of slagging from those old school riders for no longer riding a 'proper bike'. Like me. :'(

Hope that helps.

I rode mod when i first started and didnt like it but that was down to the bike, it was the old box-tubed onza t-pro (blue and silver). Parts broke every other day and the brakes insisted on rubbing, it rode awfully. However, when i had a go on a zoo python the other day now that im a lot better, it tempted me to get one, but im not sure if it will make my riding better or worse...

Anyone else who has switched wheel size?

I have.

I've tried everywheel size out there. I started on a stock, and really liked my stock and the way it was setup, but after having a few goes on peoples mods I decided I wanted one.

I made the switch and it suited me and my riding much better. Then as time went by my riding and style changed again and now a mod wasn't so suited.

I had a go on a few 24" and decided I wanted one. I havent looked back yet. Though I'd still rather ride a mod than stock.

I say go for it, if it doesn't work out, its only a bit of money lost, not end or world. If you dont you'll have that nagging "what if" thuoghts. Its not hard to find someone to swap with if things dont work. (Y)

i want a mod. but i cant really afford a brand new one along my stock.. just need to find a buyer for my Coust first.. would feel sad to part from it though, lovely frame.

i just feel a bit, erm, wrong on my stock. i tried some mods in the uk and i quite liked them. wheeler's zoo was rather nice, though id never give my money to deng if i had other decent alternatives..

i actually started off on mod, then went to stock. now i want mod back. i reckon it's just a phase though.

I started out on a mod and was quite happy riding it for a year or so. However every one that I used to ride with had stock's so after a while I wanted to get one. I decided to buy an onza woodstock which i think it's a great bike, and got on really well with it. Learn new moves and developed better techniques after a very short time.

Although a month or so ago I decided I wanted to own a mod again, and purchased an 05 echo team. Now I change bikes every other week or so, and it really helps me improve. Like I after I have been riding my mod and then switch to the stock I start trying to ride it the same. :)

Worth getting a cheap mod to ride around on at first just to see if you get on with it, and keep your stock so that you can always go back if its not for you. :)
