Tomm
Right, I want to make a website I think. Never done it before and I know next to nothing about them, and I don't want to know. There's no way I'm gonna learn HTML (or any other language for that matter) just to make this one website (and I'm not even sure what it's going to have on it...), so it needs to be simplificated :P Anyway, to make the actual site, I need some program of some sort (don't just say notepad)? I want it to be easy to use for someone like me with very little knowledge, but I also want to be able to make a nice looking site. Any suggestions? So that's that bit. Then I have to make the site, and upload it. I have FTP, I presume that's what I need? And some webspace. For that I would need to buy hosting, right? I don't mind spending a bit of money, but not very much. Is there anything else I need to know about this? And then the site name. How would I buy a domain name? I think that's about it, yeah? Anything I've missed? Tar :'(

Dan6061
Ok you probably already know this, But program wise: Macromedia Dreamweaver MX 2004 is your best shot. It's fairly easy to use if you play around with it or read the tutorials etc. Not to sure about uploading it as I use yahoo Geocities for mine, It's fairly straight forward, you just upload the .html files straight onto it and hey presto! webpage on the net :P By the way, HTML is pretty easy to understand, after playing on Dreamweaver for a while, you get to know what it all means etc. I'm sure you'd realise that you probably wont be able to make a really decent looking professional site on your first go (unless your good with photoshop etc) but in time, you will have a brilliant site. Is it a trials site by any chance? :'(
Dai the Socket
Tomm. I don't know *loads* about websites, but easily enough to make one. I've done the Heatsink site, Wytrials site which has just about finished a re-vamp using Php and such. Catch me on msn if you want to get some questions answered. I just bug Simon and Danny when my website's don't work. Wytrials f**ked up earlier today and Danny has been out on't piss so just mocked me :) I feel abused. :D (Y)
sfboy
I think the reason why no body has posted is as there are so many different options and you're really asking several questions in one plus one can’t post anything on this forum without someone calling you a dick if they know a way they think is better, faster or cheaper. But here’s what I’d do: 1. Get you website done on your home computer. Create a new directory for making your website. This may seem basic, but keep it organised with subdirectories for pics, reviews etc. and then you just need to synchronize this with your website to update it. 2. Best programme to use is indeed dreamweaver. Apparently it’s available from PC World. I don’t know how you work but I read through the tutorials and then just google something if I want to do something specific. Ensure you test your website on your hard drive by opening it in IE/FF before uploading it. 3. Get your hosting server service sorted. There are so many options here I won’t go into, but as a guide basic site with no vids will require 2GB bandwidth PM and c.100Mb storage. www.Agorahosting.com seem to have some good deals, but there are loads out there and you don’t even have to use a service in the country. 4. Register your domain. I use 123-reg , they’re pretty cheap and give you an online control panel that’s quite simple. 5. Change your DNS to the ip of your hosting. I haven’t done this in ages and it might not even be necessary. 6. FTP your site from your Hard Disk to your hosting. Again there are lots options for ftp clients (the programme you use) but I use smart ftp – it’s free for non-commercial use and is pretty decent. Make sure you put the file in the ‘www’ directory of your hosting server. 7. A complete year should cost no more than £30 (but it all depends on what you are after) (Y)
