Hey people,

I'm done with my Weetabix challenge and I'm bored.

Something about the space shuttle mission ahving landed in some other place than it should meaning it's gonna cost 'em £500K to drive it back across part of America got me thinking about space travel 'n' shit like that.

I was just wondering what people's thoughts on it were?

Reply or die.

I could put some kinda "If you don't reply to this thread in the next 5 minutes your crush will die" or something, but nah.

Its just government money, fi they didn't spend it on space travel they would spend it on weapons reasearch or something.

Afterall we all wanna beable to kiil each opther as easiliy as possible.

And also with space travel they might get hit by a solar flair and go all super-heroish on us, which would be cool.

Yeh i think its worth it, i dont know why but finding about stuff in space etc is pretty interesting IMO that relates to us being here and how things begun etc....might not understand half of it though...but meh

If there willing to do it then go for it.

It is kind of a lot of money to be spending when they seem to never discover anything worth while, but one day they might and it will all be worth it.

I can see why people would be against it, as the money could be put to far better use by feeding the poor etc, but in space they may find out something useful that will help the world in some way.

isnt area 51 just some deserted airoplane depot in the middle of no where, to be honest id like to beleive area 51 had aliens but i dont think it has, i do beleive the government have aliens or space craft in captivity and have covered it all up somewhere but i seriousely doubt it will be in area 51

Naa it's all bullshit at the moment.

They are using technology thats nearly 20 years old, we haven't got anywhere near the capabilities to actually explore far enough away to be of any use, and all their missions are really scetchy and unreliable.

There is no way i would go into space using the technology we have nowadays, it's way too risky, and there is no beneifit.

If we were supposed to bob around in space, we would have evolved into a species that can fly high, far, fast and without having to breath for years on end.

Instead, we are becoming ever more stupid, feeble and vunerable to diseases.

instead of searching for other intelligent life and habitable planets, we should sort out our shithole of a race first, and stop f**king earth up.

I thought up a saying the other day, something along the lines of:

Itellegence is our strenght, but civilisation will be our weakness.

All previous civilisations have come to and end, becasue it's an unatural way to survive.

Kinda wandered off topic there, but you get the jist.

Don't run before you can walk, mr. nasa.

I think that the manned missions are largely a waste of time. It seems like these days manned space flight costs time, money and subjects brave people to unnecessary risks in the name of not very much. I'm not really convinced that the experiments taking place in the space station are really going to benefit mankind in any new and exciting ways. We've proved we can get people up into orbit and to the moon - let's leave it at that.

However, the most interesting stuff seems to be the unmanned missions going to mars and orbiting jupiter and some going even further. They're travelling further into space than any man (or woman) ever could and finding out new and exciting things about other planets. If there's discovery to be made, I think this is where the money should go.

The only problem is that basically your average joe american loves the story of some brave american astronaut battling against the odds in a rickety old space shuttle and nasa knows if they ground the manned missions indefinitely they'll lose public support and therefore funding.

So in summary... er... yes, and no.

Its only money, I think exploring space is far more important

True, but yet untrue.

Untrue because we don't live long, I mean the evargae person lives until 7-80 at a guess, now if we lived till 500-1000, then yes, would deffo be worth the money.

Thats my opinion.

well apparently there isnt actually any reason that we all die its not because our body tires out, theres a gene apparently that is triggered after a certain time which will eventually kill us at a certain age although living for longer would mean we would all look a bit wrinkley and gravity would have done its work on us quite a bit with sag, and they are thinking of finding the gene or whatever and trying to modify it so we can live alot longer, theyve already done it with insects 'apparently' ill emphasise the apparently in my comment

I'm all for space exploration, but I do find it pretty ridiculuous that NASA seem to spend so many millions of dollars and end up with a ship that barely makes it out of the atmosphere and falls half to pieces on the way up when Richard Branson and chums (in the X-Prize) where able to get nearly out of the atmosphere with very little research and (comparatively) little money.

It's a shame really, but it looks like private enteprise might end up being the future of space travel. Although that's not such a bad thing if it pushes space technology forwards at a half decent rate.

If it helps ZZ Top be the first band to play in space then spend away :D

Seriously - yeah we should explore space it does advance technology and is also bloody interesting whats out there.

I would also like to see more exploration of the oceans, there is some scary shit down there.

I think they should allow private enterprises to explore space. It's touched upon in 'Deception Point' by Dan Brown. NASA have far too much hold on space exploration. If Mr. Billionaire was interested enough I'm sure there would be some exciting discoveries waiting to be made.

I'm in agreement with Drew here, manned = :) unmanned = :P

Has anyone ever thought about the infinity of space... it's like, pretty weird. It doesn't end :D

I think about this atleast once a week :P :D no im no geek! yet VERY puzzled about it all!!!

SURLY we CANT be the only life form out there!!! :P :)

Its abit weird, if we kept going straight out in space, where would we go? if wen kept going forever!!!!!!! i really want to know this!!! is there somwhere where the universe ends? nobody knows!!! lol

EH?!>:<{}_ im really puzzled now!!!! lol

Are we actually here? are we a figment of our own imagingasion (haha that the worst speeling ever!!!) hahahaha

Bo but seriously, i want to know!

Yes...youre all actually a figment of 'my' imagination :D

no one elses....just mine

indeed, tis mind boogling :)

It would be impossible to ever tell, they reckon space is around 30billion light years across, so even if we saw the edge of the universe now in pictures, the light thats travelled from the edge were seeing would be about 15billionlight years old, and as the universe is always expanding it would have become even bigger and we would be seeing extrememly old images of what it used to be like. Then just to make it even more confudding they dont think space even has an edge the think its more of a curve like two ends meeting up so if you kept going in a certain direction all the time you would eventually just be going round in circles.

I dont know im just going to shut up its too confuddling :P

lol everytime i try and think about it my brain nearly melts,

i can never understand how 'space' can just be 'there', like, it must be in something? but then that something must be in something else...

and what would the 'end' of everything look like? would it even be visible, cos after all it's just nothing, otherwise it wouldn't be the end would it.

arhhh i did it againnnn *blurrgghahgoorble" :D

Yeah, so the universe is currently 30 billion light years across. That is a calculation based on the time since the big bang and the speed of light I assume? Until things can travel faster than light, an impossibility, the universe continues to be infinite.

If the universe is infinite, the probability of finding yourself on another planet Earth, where everything is exactly the same, is 100%. The maximum percentage doesn't really boggle me... but the fact there is another guy, alias Royaltrials, typing away on trials-forum.co.uk, somewhere out there does. That is only if the universe really is infinite. :'(

They do also say that it links around in a big spiral. (Remember Asteroids - disappear off one side of the screen and appear on the other?)

And also how there is more than one universe, parallel universes and all that jazz.

And also how the universes fit together in a honeycomb pattern, a-la Blockbusters.

How anyone can say these things confuses me once more. I think that's why space is exploration is worthwhile, there is so much to discover out there. Alien life forms are bound to exist. The conditions on this planet support life because they are unique, but surely something similar is out there?

Confusing, but certainly interesting.
