boon racoon
after taking another bad slam yesterday and ending up with an ankle the size of a tennis ball and as black as a plumb...does anyone know of any decent ankle protectors which I can wear with my globes. i don't want trials boots, i'm not a pixie and i'm 99% they wouldn't do much more than standard shoes anyway. i'm thinking kinda the slip in sort almost like football shin pads but without the shin part lol my left ankle / foot has always been a b*****d and i've ended up in my current state (unable to walk) half a dozen times in the past few years. and twice this month! any help appreciated!
Dai the Socket
Hey Boon. I'm ordering this one, for my left ankle too. I ruptured a tendon a while back and it just keeps rolling 24/7! Until I can get some physio treatment, again, from someone who'll make it better, I'm getting: http://www.physiosupplies.com/cgi-bin/sh00...tml%23a101#a101 I know it's expensive but I've been told by numerous people it's worth it. It keeps your ankle perfectly straight, and protects it from knocks from the crank arm etc. Might be something to think about. Hope I helped. UrbanPoet
Link to Mod661's: here. I've had trouble with my ankles for years. but I now wear something similar to these and I've found them majorly helpful. They're simple but effective, and arn't intrusive in any way. Just fit and forget, so to speak. They may not protect against anything major, but it just helps with the day to day falling and spraining. endofreak
661 make 2 different ankle braces as well as a simple ankle guard. I recently bought THESE. They offer great support, I can't see me ever being able to roll my ankle in these. At the same time they still offer surprisingly good freedom of movement. They also have a pro version HERE. poopipe
I agree with physio about bracing your ankle up - its like painkillers, ok as a temporary solution but you end up doing yourself more damage in the long run. He's right about re-educating your ankle as well - it was a good 2-3 years before I was fully recovered from a torn achilles tendon and a lot of that was spent learning to walk without a limp. If you're after protection from knocks etc. you ought to be able to find ankle guards for football in a sports shop - failing that, invest in some expensive football shinpads as these often have them built in. oh - and learn to roll when you hit the ground. A good crash should see you 15-20 feet from your bike when everything stops moving

Dai the Socket
Well mine should be here Monday so Wayne, we'll meet next week for a Bradford ride yeah? And I'll tell you lot how good I think it is etc. Hopefully, it'll stop it bending when I'm on backwheel and give it more support! Laters.. Inspired Dave
The 661 Pro definitely gets my vote. Used one for couple of years, without a doubt it saved me rolling my ankle badly on numerous occasions. However, I've been seen to by Physio-Si and now ankle is feeling much stronger. Using the brace over that length of time had weakened my ankle a lot, to the point where just having my blanket resting on my ankle at night would cause me pain! If you have dodgy ankles then see a physio before you decide to get a brace. A brace will do for injury prevention while getting strength/flexibility back from a serious injury, but long term it's only going to do bad things. benno
I know Sam Wheeler had exactly the same problem (well, he kept reducing his ankles to a bloody mess on his rear magura) and I think he bought the 661 Ankle Biters, it might be worth sending him a PM?
