Canned
Hello all, The non drive crank on my T Rex is constantly working loose. It looks like I'm missing something but can't figure out how. On the drive side there is a kind of black cover surrounding the actual bolt into BB but it looks like I've lost it on the other side (the first time I noticed the looseness it had managed to get quite loose) Is this a critical part? It only seems to be a kind of "decorative" surround of the crank to BB bolt..... Is this why my crank keeps working loose? Tony
James Quigley
As far as I'm aware Tony this little black plastic bit on the crank bolt is decorative, I dont have them on my bolts and they're fine. I think your problem lies in the cranks themselves. When I used to run power pro's (it was ages ago) they always worked loose, but since I got middleburns, same BB, it's fine. I'm guessing you've got the cranks that came with the T-Rex and so are probably some form of budget crank, my advise is to upgrade your cranks or try and use plenty of locktite. zoojames
My middleburns kept doing that on my rex! I had to get new cranks! Twas a bit of a gay! James :)
Nick Garland
That black thing keep dirt out but alot of peoples cranks who havent run the black cover seem to round, coincidence, yes but your cranks are now probaboly dead. Go buy some burns.
Mr Motivator
Lock tight the botls in :) Or just by isis :D
Onza Kieron
If its a spec 1 t-rex then the cranks are square taper therefore once the cranks have come loose they are f***** and its time to but isis. With isis you have to buy new bbs often but you never need another set of cranks unless yours snap. :)
Tom Booth
If the cranks are slightly rounded(which it sounds like) Get a coke can, and cut squares out of it the same size as the taper of your crank arms, then put them inside the crank are and mallet the bugger on, then put your bolt in and tighten it and ride away. But this should only be a temporary job until you can afford the new crankset/ it arivves. Cheers Tom
Canned
Can anyone recommend a set of cranks to suit then? I'd be tempted to go ISIS but money's tight so it's a value for money set of squares for me! Tony
Mr Motivator
Some SQ burns then :) Means you dont have to buy annother bottom bracket :D
Dai the Socket
If you ran the crank arm loose, it might of worn your Square Taper'd edges off a bit, so it'll keep working loose. Lock tight it on and tighten it up a beast! Failing that. Buy ISIS and be pimp :D I want ISIS :)
Tom Booth
Deffo square taper burns, Mine feel as stiff, if not stiffer then my Isis truvativ husslefelt crankset on me other bike. Highly recomonded by me :) Tom
downhill_rob2@hotmail.com
Just buy some new ISIS tensile cranks " :o" They sexual and you can buy the cranks, and BB all for £130 :) :D :P
James Quigley
I'm voting burns, I've been running them for years and they have never worked loose, in fact I've rounded the thread in my left one trying to get the bugger off. Plus you get the advantage of running the super small ti-guard.
dave33
mate dont bother buying isis waste of cash, just buy some sq tapers tensile or buns, keep an eye on ur crank bolts too.. you could try a different bb as the taper on ur is probly 15 degree's try one with 12 it does make quite a difference.. but as the craks you have are crap its time for an upgrade any way :(
Tomm
I've just gone from ISIS burns to Square ones, and I have to say that I probably wouldn't spend extra to get ISIS again. Aside from the fact that the cranks themselves are more expensive in ISIS, you also have to pay more for your BB's (plural :( ), and I certainly can't feel the difference in terms of stiffness. Just keep an eye on the bolts every now and again and you'll be fine :ermm:
Canned
Jesus lads! The price on those suggestions seem absolutely mad! I guess you guys see them as value for money cos they've lasted you but I was thinking more in the line of these: Anyone got any opinions? They're £

Shimano 22t lightweight chainring along with DMR stainless bashguard to hold off the rocks or double kenisis stainless bashguards to do twice the job. 175mm length. Tomm
They look SWEET... but... Need square taper! POO! anyone got any experience of: ← Noooooo! Everyone must have used those cranks in their riding career, but they're awful. If you can get the tapers to last longer than ten minutes, you're doing well. Also they are bendier than, um, Bill Clinton's knob (Oooh, I'm so naughty!). The DDG ones might be a bit better, but I've not used them. I would really just save up for some Middleburns, which will work out cheaper than powerpros in the long run. But either of your suggestions will do until you can afford some 'Burns :(
