Tomm
My girlfriend just got her bike stolen. It was a 10-year old Claud Butler fully rigid mountain bike. Pretty basic spec, but it all worked and was nice and light. Basically, she wants a new one the same, but these days it's hard enough to find a bike without full suspension, let alone a rigid beast. She should be getting £200-£250 ish on the insurance, so that's what she wants to spend. I told her to get a road bike, but she doesn't like them because they're not comfortable. She won't be doing many miles, so I think a mountain bike would be fine anyway. Something like a GT will just get stolen even if it bottom of the range (bike thieves ain't exactly the sharpest tools), so nothing that looks expensive. So: £200 ish Fully rigid Just for road use really Good value Un-stealable (Y) Any ideas? Thanks in advance ;)

Rob_P
Just had a look on CRC, bike dock and wiggle. Not much about really, its all front suspension at the least. There was this but its front sus........CLICK third one down. Your best bet is to go down to your local bike hire place (if you have one) and go and see what they've got! I worked in a cycle hire for the last 2 summers and at the end of the season they sell of some of their bikes. The mountain bikes we had we dawes rigid ones that were really good and if its been at a cycle hire shop then it will of been serviced every day or so after its gone out. They normally sell them off cheap as well, like £120. Thats your best bet I reckon! Rob (Y) ;)
minitrialer
www.ridgeback.co.uk , alright components, light, you can get quick realeases that actually screw out so that ou take the little handle with you so it can't be stolen! will
Go to halfords and see if any have any Apollo outriders still available, they cost £50 are fully rigid. They are however quite heavy, but you still have ~£150 to spend on a heavy duty lock and maybe a few lighter components. will .
Andy P
If you don't mind getting a bike from halfords, have a look at the Carrera Subway's. From what you're describing, it sounds like the ideal candidate - its basically a cross-breed; a road going mountain bike thats rigid with semi slicks. They don't look half bad either, a nice matte black and fairly light weight. Its also right on your budget. You get a free 6 week servce thats valid for 3 months, and the bike is garunteed for a year. I should get out of work more..... Hope that helps (Y) Andy P
N.Wood
Yeh i think looking on CRC/Wiggle etc., are the wrong places to look, companies seen to be nice such as Specialized are just gonna get stolen. So yeh, i agree with the Halfords bikes, and as has been mentioned a hybrid seems a good choice. If you have a local CyclesUK.com shop, or an Action Bikes or similar, have a look in one of them (Y)
Tomm
specialized mate :D ← That looks good, I shall certainly bear that in mind :P If you don't mind getting a bike from halfords, have a look at the Carrera Subway's. I shall take a trip to Halfords with her :) Thanks to everyone so far, keep 'em coming though
Urpedigreechumdog
24" BMX? They come brand new for £200 from where ever :)
MadManMike
Why does she not want sus? Sus is more comfortable than rigid!
Tomm
Why does she not want sus? Sus is more comfortable than rigid! ← Yeah, but suspension takes the price up and is pointless on the road. In fact it's heavier, so I would see it as a bad thing on this kind of bike, even without the price difference.
Dai the Socket
I should get out of work more..... ← I was going to tell you that. Yea. The Subways are pretty perfect. I'd have a look. And ask anyone on here if there's a local Halfords and they can get you 15% off :( Nick
Brian Bleech
suspension (so are disk brakes no matter how cheap) makes the bike more appealing to thiefs too - stay rigid and vees! the specalized looks good, I would take the stickers off though as specalized is a 'name' and therefore more appealing to thiefs. Dawes and Ridgeback make decent hybrids for cheap prices, usually have decent specs and frames for the price. Plus Dawes are generally 'safe' handling bikes.
