Apple Colour Heatsinks

Someone sent me some pics of their's after 2 hours use. It didn't look too great :)\ More pad material worn than you'd have really expected after such a short amount of time.

I really hope Steve manages to get the perfect compound he's aiming for, which he doesn't appear to have done yet...

heatsink should focus on making a pad for ground rims, to compete with koxx and plazmatic instead of making for smooth rims.

In the news it says about the sexual collaboration between steve and tartybikes to end the hunt for good grind pads. Although its gonna be hard pushed to beat plazmatics which ive been using recently.... they really are underated im in love.

Someone = god  :)

No doubt there have been a shed load of pads which dont seem to have come out of prototype stage? The whole pad making game is a lot more trouble than most people take in to account when they start out. But it seems like hes taking some leaps in the right direction with the moulded pads. I like the point he picked up on about the pads rocking under braking, which i found happened a lot with fast wearing pads such as zoo's which just ended up rounding off for me.

I wouldn't have called the Konigs a 'finished' product; they too were just prototypes? Well, pretty much prototypes leastways: They weren't the final compound, hence the change so quickly?

I guess it's just that Steve's between a rock and a hard place: you need money to make and test pads, and to get money you have to sell pads.

plaz are hard to beat. ive been running plaz for a fair while now, can only fault the wet weather performance, but it's still acceptable.

pads always rock on the piston. the softer they are, the rounder they will become and eventually rip out of the backings if you're unlucky or a bad mechanic. my plazmatics haven't rounded at all (at least very little) which is good...

it is nice to see that steve has sorted moulding and new backings out, but to be honest, i'd rather see more money put into r&d than finishing touches and aesthetics.

Are we talking about the 'honig' pads?

If so, I got some of Steve a week ago...

I dont have a grind so I dont know what theyre like with that but they seemed abit soft :turned:

I have to use a good amount of tar to trust them and they are pretty useless on a smooth rim without tar :D

As has been discussed in this thread, we're onto it, and already much closer than a couple of days ago :D

I totaly 100% agree, I love my plaz pads.

I must agree that the Plazmatics I'm currently running are rather sweet. They seem to be a of a benchmark... But like you said Chris, Steve's put a lot of time into the finer points of pad production, so we're hoping that, with the extra bits and bobs of knowledge I can contribute (including testing/feedback of the pads, alongside Dave), the compound can be finally nailed. Theres certainly been a few interesting discoveries already (Y)

Are the pads set up PERFECTLY square? Without a grind to bed them it, it will take a long time for them to reach full performance. Adding tar doesn't really help - it just acts as a barrier between pad and rim, so they'll never bed in!

I have a pair of honigs on the dead grind on my ronnie and the lock is pretty much awesome (Y)

I tried some yesterday on Stan's bike (dead, light grind) and they were pretty good. I'm yet to try them on a fresh light grind, but the ones I used were on my uber-fresh (and pretty harsh) grind didn't seem to like it - hence the new recommendation for Konigs on light grinds/smooth rims, with further development being carried out on a harsh grind brake pad.

Hi,

I've decided that there are still some things that can be optimised about my pads, so I've taken them down from my site whilst this is sorted out.

The good news is that one year on from the initial Tarty/Heatsink/RimJam pad wars, we're all in a much nicer place and Adam has very kindly agreed to help me out getting these pads sorted once and for all. By pooling resources we're hopeful that we can finally achieve the intial objective of offering performance pads in all aspects comparable to the best available, and importantly for all us riders, at new levels of value!

It's all rather nice and fuzzy that both Adam and I have also been generous with our assistance to Chris too. Overall the most important thing is to challenge the hegemony of arguably overpriced pads so that riders have more choice :turned:

Although you're not happy with the pads Sam, I'm pleased that they were some generous freebies that I sent out :D

Back to the Tartybikes/Heatsink collaboration....No one could have expected it, but basically it's great news for everyone. The pads will only be available again once Adam has given them his renouned scrutiny, multiple thrashings and is happy with them :D

This pads developement thing is certainly more work than I was expecting when I started thinking that it was possible to offer better value than the pads we were buying at relatively high prices. Since then, 1 year ago, I've had a baby (now 8 months old!), and spent out more money out than has ever come back in! It's like approaching the end of a marathon race only to discover the finishing line has been moved to the end of the street! I'm committed to breaking the tape, but at the moment with all the aspects of my life I'm trying to juggle (full time job, married with young baby etc) I can only reach it with the kind assistance of others, and who better than Adam Read to help nail it!

Cheers if you could be bothered to read the above!

Steve

Steve does have a very good point there! He has always given me either cheap or free pads for testing and most of the time they have been nearly there but not quite spot on, much like the new pads! I have a set that seemed to wear rather quickly and could do with some tweeks but I cant complain in the slightest as they were free! If I had spent the same amount as on a set of koxx bloxx for instance then it would of been a different story!

Well done steve for all your hardwork and dedication, soon we will have the perfect pad!

christ my honig pads the yellowy murky colour pads are fine, and who ever saw my bike yesterday will have seen it has a fair harsh grind on and they are spot on!

just use what your comfortable with IMO

Waynio....................

if someone rides down a hill with the brake dragging then yes a softer pad WILL ware out i did it to a pair of konig pads. BUT i dont tend to drag my brake on, i only use it when necessary.

The only problem i see here is that even when the perfect compound is discovered for the pads, some people will still think it is crap. Mainly due to the fact that SO many people don't have the faintest idea how to set up brakes. Also, the compound may be perfect on your specific set up, with the correct grind, rim, brake booster, brake lever and set up but it may fail on others... Obviously that is why your testing will/has covered many different areas of set up.

Unfortunately people will still slag off brake pads saying they are crap, when the real reason is they have contaminated them, or their pads are hitting the tyre, or a million other reasons that have nothing to do with the compound.

Pity really, but for the people who can set up brakes it is an exiting time, and i look foward to the results of all your hard work, thanks guys :D :turned:

If I were to be sent some free, I'd gladly tell everyone that they were awesome (hint hint)  :turned:"

Congratulations on the stupidest post of the thred.

It is a bit of a gamble though, buy some pads you've never used befor. I bought some of the red (koings) heastinks and they were just pants on my smooth rim compared to my zoo's. £12 down the drain. :D

The konigs were the best pads i have ever used, the koxx bloxx are the second best (i'm using them now) and the Batch B's were the third, and kool stops were forth and black pads are just unbearable.....

I think that the new honigs are really good pads, but my mate has them on his stock, and since they are 04's maggys, i'm not used to putting loads of power on the lever to stop, so they slip on me, if i had them on my bike, they would be awsome! lol

thats the problem, everyone that gets a set at discount price or free from either rim jam or heatsink go around saying they're ace when they may not be!

im not saying either rim jams or heatsinks are bad but people seem to hype them up simply because they get them for free!?!? seems like an utter waste of time, if i were steve or chris i would give pads to people who give honest feedback....

sorry to moan (Y)

Thats rubbish!!

Did I say they were great just cus I got them for free, no!?

I think you'll find that the people who are on the heatsink team or get pads for cheap/free are probably as about as honest as you'll get!

People arnt going to say yes Steve these pads are amazing just to get everyone to buy them. Think about it, this is the cycle you see.....people get pads for free.....tells everyone there fantastic when there not......everyone rushs to buy new heatsink pads.......a lot of disapointed customers.....word gets round there rubbish........heatsink=outta buisness.

Use ur nogin!

fight fight...*bish bash bosh*

i set up a set of them red heatsink pads on my mates bike the other day and they were instantly good.

i made sure the pads hit the rim at pretty much the same time and that they hit the rim square and half the pad wasnt off the rim which was pretty hard with canti mounts and a 521 but i worked through it B) (loser).

as soon as i did it i went out the front on it and had a mess about and they felt nice (no squidge making a gay lever feel) and they actually felt sticky. this was on a shitty worn grind.

and these were the pads that were taken back because these new ones are better? if these new ones are even better than the feel i got from the red ones im saving up my money right now and i might have enough money by this time next year to order a set of Mr heatsink him self :o .

i dont think anyone should be saying anything about the pads if they havent even tried them.

Rob

example, this lad got some blue heatsinks, made a video of how well they were gripping, and thats fair enough but he was using tar!!! does it really make much difference what pads ur using if you have tar on ur rim? haha

im sure there have been some other people who have dont this kind of thing...
