AdamR28
Right, we're on a shared line, which makes my 56k modem go at 31.2k - infuriating to say the least! So, looking to get broadband... however we're in the middle of nowhere (haven't even got gas, haha), so its proving tricky - especially with the damn shared line :S I've ordered a service with Bullshit (oops, meant Bulldog) Broadband (now on my 'hate list' along with O2), who managed to get my order wrong, and then lose it, so I don't particularly fancy going with them. So, anyone got any suggestions please? Looking for a 1 or 2 Meg connection with no transfer limits and minimal setup costs. I've got everything needed except for a modem and filter. Thanks in advance for any help! Ads
Caleb
Is it the adsl filter you don't have? if worse comes to worse i have a few and a ssagemmodem kicking about you could have :S . Were with tiscali, cant ffaultem too much except for the asian call centres i find it hard to understand what they are saying. Please don't take that as racism it just gets very frustrating when your paying high phone line rate call and you have to get them to repeat or speak louder all the time. I suppose there only employed for cheap labour. However now we've gone wwirelesswe've had no problems at all not a sniff. There also very cheap, i also believe tesco? do a damn good service aswell. Bit o.t but does anyone know where i could get my hands on a good copy of xp with cd key as i need to wipe mine and cant seem to be able to download a working version. Peace out Caleb
Nick Garland
NTL have caps but they really arnt enforced. Im not sure if you can get NTL up there, alot of people slate them but they do it all in one, internets good anyway, 2mb and I've only ever not had net for an hour in the 5 years or more I have had it. AdamR28
Yeah, had NTL at my house at uni... they were pretty good. However theres not a hope in hell of getting them to lay cables out here :S Might be just worth me speaking to loads of them, and seeing if any are willing to give BT a good kick up the arse and sort our phone line? Dan6061
We have AOL Platinum..I know everyone hates AOL blah de blah.. But if you make a new connection (like I have) you don't have to sign on by opening AOL. And it connects faster then what t should. Silver- 512kbps mine connected at 576kbps then we got Gold- 1mbps mine connected at 1.1mbps Now we have Platinum- 2mbps mine connects at 2.2mbps Not a huge difference..but it connects to how it should do when I use AOL. so yeah..AOL's not really a bad one, maybe not the best idea if you havent already got AOL because apparently it's hard to delete. :D :S
endofreak
If you also use the phone line to make phone calls you could try a Talk Talk or Homecall service. They will give you a high speed connection and free phone calls.
Danny
Id contact bt and check its actually possible to get broadband on that shared line. I wouldnt be supprised if you couldnt.
inzane_2
no i am pretty sure that if you asked BT they would de-share your line so you can have broadband... you have to check that you are with in limits and can actually have broadband? give us a shout on msn if you want any info. tom e
http://www.nildram.co.uk UK's #1! Never had a problem with them within the 5-6 years connected with them, i'm now getting 2mb connection with no caps for £20. Nildram support is top quality, very helpful over email and phone. It's very cheap for such a great service, and they always have special offers flying about on their site.

Jono ← Cheers Jono, will probably give you a shout :( The problem arose when the people who moved into our old house (we moved 3 doors away) stole our old line - so they now have 2, and we ended up with no phone :D Surely it would make more sense to put both their lines as 'shared'? Probably worth speaking to BT like you said Dan... altho they were completely useless in trying to resolve our 'no phone' problem a while back :- Cheers guys. JIX
I was in a very similar position to you, One mile drive to our house and nothing around it for miles, no gas either. Any way we were with bt for normal connection and asked them to do broad band and they gave us a huge quote to do it. Went shopping around and went with wanadoo because they are not to expensive and they gave us a free modem and all that, plus they paid bt to install the cable and everything. Tony Harrison
BT Broadband. Might not be the cheapest but it is reliable and the customer service is good. I'm always sceptical of these crappy '2Mb broadband £9.99/month" type offers. You don't get owt for nowt, and generally you get what you pay for. AdamR28
Well, decided to go with BT, since we have a phone line with them. Ordered no problems, due to be installed yesterday, rang them this morning since it wasn't working... 'Oh yeah, we're gonna have to get a new line installed for you'. Lay a new line for ONE person for 1.5 miles? I think not. New hate list: All Telephone Companies, haha.
Corish
If you can, Telewest. If not try: BT, Wanadoo

inzane_2
Telewest may be an option. they dont use bt network as far as i know however most ADSL companys use bts network, so if you need another line off bt then most people wont give you the broadband link. It may be worth trying NTL see if they can provide some internet for you! Also ask the gas board they do broadband aswell, they might be able to put in another line while they put some gas in for you!!! :) :P :D (Y)"
Nick Garland
If all else fails theres always satelite internet, fast but expensive.
Simon
If all else fails theres always satelite internet, fast but expensive. ← Its not actually, my friend was on 2mb satellite as his area wasn't broadband enabled, but his family really wanted it. 2mb link, and barely got 150kb/sec. Unless you get full on high speed link, its expensive, and pointless.
