Dai the Socket
Well! I need some help from your people who know loads about Hi-fi's (Y) I've got about £250 - 300 max to spend on a nice amp for my room, and some speakers. I'm going to put my iPod into it through my line out in it's dock. It's going to need to have good quality and look cool, with being able to send out to 2 sets of speakers preforably at the same time or interchangable. The music it needs to be good at playing etc is Rock / Punk stuff I guess. I want a crisp sound with good treble and mid, but wouldn't mind a separate bass speaker, or good bass in the speaker set. Got to be pretty loud as they're going to be in my room. I'm not sure what wattage this is but my 120watt guitar amp, when it has a line in from my iPod. It's uber too loud! And feeds into 2 x 12" speakers. Just wondering what kind of stuff you would suggest for me. Thanks and any help is much apprichiated. Nick :)
andyroo
Well! Blah... ← Go Sony for amp definately, they are always rated as good as products twice the price, check out www.unbeatable.co.uk for good online prices for stuff, get the best you can afford. Get a good stereo amp over a cheaper surround sound amp. Sony speakers are amazing - if you buy the top spec ones. The top ones have kevlar woofers and tweeters capable of reaching 70,000 hz, meaning good crisp clear treble. but if not, Kef make a very good range of cheaper speakers, as do Mission. If in doubt, look your product up in What Hifi? magazine. I have a nice sony cd deck for sale if youre interested! delusional
Spend a bit less on the amp and speakers and get a CD deck as well. There's little point spending out a load of money on a decent amp and speakers if you're only going to plug an iPod into it! Take a look at Richer Sounds for pretty cheap prices, or even better get over to Superfi who are well priced and really knowledgeable (and have some pretty good bundle deals on). If you ask them for advice they should be able to recommend you a good combination for your money and music tastes :)

Dai the Socket
Thats for the information from you two  I was wondering what you thought of: Amp: http://www.superfi.co.uk/index.cfm/page/mo...Product_ID/1115 Which is a SONY TAFE370 AMPLIFIER. 70watt per channel I believe. It's good anyway  And then I was going to get the CD seperate: http://www.superfi.co.uk/index.cfm/page/mo...Product_ID/2008 which seems pretty cool. If not, there's one on the page before which is cheaper and the entry level one. Maybe that one. I best buy some CD's then (Y) And spekers. Oof. This is the bit i'm wanting to choose carefully on! Either: http://ws4.richersounds.com/showproduct.ph...d=CELE-F35C-DAP and buy two of them. Or: Two of these http://ws4.richersounds.com/showproduct.ph...D-304-AVANT-SIL Sorry about the shit post. Layout and content is wank :o

Layout and content is wank :o ← I had that amp alongside the cd player im trying to sell, and although im bias in trying to sell my cd player, they are a match for each other, same make and range, so i would suggest, if you get the sony amp, that you get it from me! i would sell it to you for half the retail price plus postage, its in new condition. There is no point in getting the SACD player, save yourself the money and get a CD player. Like mine! (BUY BUY BUY!) For SACD you wil need SACD speakers and a surrond sound amp to benefit from it. Which is worth it but costs around about £2000 to do. But anyway, yes, that amp is very nice. Rated well by What Hifi (5 out of 5) and offers everything you need, sacrificing complicated techno wizardry, and just gaining pure sound quality. some people seem to think that the wattage of a speaker rates how good it is, but it is infact impedance. These speakers here are a good buy, and excellent quality if your budget stretches that far, for you price, Mission is probably your best bet. If not those ones, there are cheaper ones on the site, but they definately are the ones id go for. Dont bother buying centre speakers as a pair, they dont reprodue bass well because they are for directional purposes only, for use with surround sound kits. Did i mention im selling a sony cd player? check for sale wanted!!! BIG EDIT!!!!! DO NOT and i mean DO NOT scrimp on cable! get decent speaker wire, like QED bronze aniversary and get some nice thick interconnects for your amp to cd player, must be gold plated for extra bling! no seriously, wire can make or break a system, so dont go all cheap when it comes to your wiring. Dai the Socket
hahaha. Ok i'm interested in your Cd player! Best be cheap though. Especially since i'm paying out for expensive speakers. I'm guessing the speakers you linked me to Andy, don't come in a pair? So i'd need to buy 2 of them? That's like £300 and off quid on speakers. Expensive. Couldn't advise anything a tad cheaper could you? That's if the price quoted isn't for a pair. I'm pretty sure i'm going to get that amp. My parents said they'd buy it, so I might even get them to buy a CD seperate too, (probably from you) and then I'll fork out for the speakers. I best buy some CD's then  Thanks for your help so far. PS I'm not looking for bookshelf speakers. Something beasty and good quality, yet still loud, for some bassy music etc. I don't have much knowledge in this area

MadManMike
If you can afford it, go for NAD or Denon. They are super stylish and VERY good quality. Have a search on google for them!
JTM
I can vouch for the fact that the sony amp is very good value for money. Sounds great. Tis a shame sony dont produce car audio like they do home audio!
The enchanted broomstick
tangent amplifier look at the for an amp, stylish in silver rather than the black which i personally prefer, remote control (rarity these days) 80w RMS which isnt a power to be sneezed at and all for a price of £89.99! bargain mate so what do you use it to power why not choose some of these! tangent speakers these things are going to handle exactly what the amp gives them, they look pretty damn stylish not too big but a nice size to show that you have something to care for. The front facing ports work better than the ones that face the wall because you can put them anywhere in your room and as long as they are facing towards you in a respective manner the bass will come straight to you. Dont be fooled by the small driver size they do still kick out, manufacturing of the box helps provide bass and i have actually done a test on these speakers before for a mate they kick out pretty well. and for £89.99 who's complaining. So we have reached a total of £179.98 and got yourself what you want, just a suggestion dude but its good stuff and easily available from your local currys. cheers, stu

biketrialler
80w RMS isnt actually 80w of power though. You dont need a remote on an amp really. Anything that you can buy in Currys, you could get something much nicer online for the same price.
MadManMike
Yeah, if you have a thousand pounds lying around  ← Nah, on eBay there are some bargains, I had a look a few months back, NAD CD player & Amp, went for £100 each! andyroo
The 70 watts per channel on the Sony Amp is the equivelent to something like 120-150 watts RMS that is advertised on crappy stereos/speakers.

The enchanted broomstick
currys was just an example of a shop, seeing as nearly everyone can take a trip to a local one and just go for a test and see how they sound, ive tested the speakers and i would strongly say that the sound is brilliant for the price. IF you can find these as cheap as i did they were an absolutely amazing buy, i got them for £110 around christmas time last year from either dixons or hughes i cant quite remember and they sound absolutely awesome mate i have kicked the living hell out of these with a PA amp and they just keep going. I tried looking for them on the net for you but i cant find them anywhere near the same price, maybe they were on a limited offer or something? this quote worried me a little "Jamo X-5 Series Home theatre and hi-fi system Recommended retail price: $2297 (inc. GST)" (Y) you see my ones of these are just sitting in my wardrobe being stored for when i move out because my new PA amp will blow them to bits so i dunno if you make me a good offer i may sell them otherwise im just keeping them for when i move out. stu
the666ers
:S" Cambridge audio :D" You know it makes sense. However richer sounds is definitely worth a look, if you can find a local store ( i know theres one near me but I'm not sure how many branches they have) and go in and explain what you're looking for and how much you have to spend. They will be able to advise you on the best possible set up for your money. Also, I can't stress enough how important it is to have decent leads (RCA and Speaker) as these literally make the world of difference. Look out for shielded ones etc.... I spend 80 quid on 3 leads for my HI-FI, expensive but it's worth it. James
The enchanted broomstick
the 666ers is 100% RIGHT my stereo had loads of joined and spliced cables and it really doesnt help. As soon as i re-wired the whole setup with OFC (oxygen free copper cable) it sounded sooooo much clearer, gets rid of crackling noises hits the notes much clearer and takes less strain off of the amp if you get the correct thickness of wire. stu :-
Dai the Socket
Ok.
