Mr Motivator
I can do 6ft static and 8ft rolling. I could push the rolling gaps further and probably make another foot, but with statics I just seem to stop at 6. I've been doing 6 foot gaps for 12months now with no improvement now matter how much I try and its kind of annoying. My current technique for statics is either one hop to the edge and then a massive lurch from there, using momentum, or hop as far to the edge as possible (in which case for me is about 8 inches behind the ledge) and lurching from there. I know all about the pinch gap technique (using tyre boing at the egde of the ledge) but I cant get that and just either run out of pasty after the hopping or just kick and smack my bars into my thighs (resulting in bruises) and just heading straight downwards. So the only way I can do it is by starting about 8 inches from the edge and powering from there. Its annoying as theres this gap from a bench to a wall near me that I've been trying for two days and I just cant make it, i.e landing just clipping it, its just silly annoying. So If any other of you on here are in/have been in the same position as me, did you find any little ways to improve your technique? I've been practicing the height to distance gap ratio and have got that right, just cant seem to go far. Maybe I've reached my peak as there is surely only a certain distance man can travel airborn on a bike from a standstill? Any help very much appreciated. Lawnmowerman
Pull your bars into your chest and flick your back end out (Y) It also helps if you try to flick your back end up a bit. Its hard to explain :">
Mr Motivator
Pull your bars into your chest and flick your back end out (Y) It also helps if you try to flick your back end up a bit. Its hard to explain :"> ← Yeah I kinda do that, and push the rear wheel forwards with my feet and twist a little if need be. I can also do the thing where you pull the bars to your chest and then away again quickly, It makes gaps smoother but not further.
Lawnmowerman
I dunno then (Y) Try building up your muscle in your legs for more power :S
Mr Motivator
I dunno then (Y) Try building up your muscle in your legs for more power :S ← My legs are already chunk with muscle. A grrr. Maybe I should preload by like sitting over the backwheel on the ledge and then fooking lunging my body forwards and upwards whilst kicking, lol Sam
Lawnmowerman
Try farting while gapping for a little extra pastie (Y)
Mr Motivator
Try farting while gapping for a little extra pastie (Y) ← Yeah not a bad idea. Or I could learn to do it the french way (backwards)
Pauly
yeh man keep your legs bent when on the backwheel and then when you gap push your legs out straight a gooden and make sure your leaning real far back and you will soon fly worked for me when i was at the 6 ft stage and now i can get 7.5ft at a push (Y) Pauly hope it helps

Mr Motivator
can you whack a vid up of you doing 6ft? ← I will, erm Il have to film one tomorow. Good idea (Y)
dave33
you wont get any where gapping like the way you are, try from the edge and static not with a one hop runup. get that sorted and you will improve (Y)
munkee
pinch gapping is the way forward then really nowadays?
Ali C
try and get hight as well as distance, this is how you do a "pinch" gap. You dont go flat, you need to imagian your aiming for a landing slightly higher than where you are going, the upwards motion stops the back wheel from just flicking off the object. dont forget to use that body weight either, use your mometum to get across the gap. RyanRs
just watch the CLS and neil Tunnicliffe vids, theres usually good slow-mos in them. thats what i did and i went from being able to gap 1 bike length, to almost being able to gap 2!! (static.) its all about having all your weight right over the bars, with your front wheel as low as possable, before your backwheel leaves the ground, then you have maximum reach over your bike and can pull it from below you , pull your bars upand tuck your legs up, then push the back wheel out foward.. i taught meself by drawing 2 chalk lines on flat ground. no need to go out and find gaps to learn on. do the gap when u no u can do the distance! ..just watch the vids.. ry
Mr Motivator
A couple of gaps
Ali C
I think its just a lack of body movement, you dont preload before you jump. try again but really crouch back when you takeoff, then throw yourself across the gap. And the thing I said about trying to get hight as well as distance still stands
Burton
Like Ali C said. Aim above the the gap. Get a bit more height, so you can extend your legs better. And as soon as you land, extend your arms as if your trying to punch though something :S
AdamR28
Looks like (especially the 2nd gap) you're not really jumping - just pedalling the bike across the gap. Try and jump (like others have said) upwards as well as forwards.

trialsni
Why did you post then? ← try lifting your goodfoot up a little as you drop the bike and your body on preload just before you go and jump/lunge give it some too much will be bad too little also bad but just right and you notice the difference hope this helps
Endohopper
I'm no Hermance myself , but found it useful to load up some pedal power against the back brake , then release this explosively when doing the whole jump / pedal vibe . Only applies to static of course .
Ducko
id say just practice loads? im crap at gaps but am getting better you have to jump higher to gap further really which is more about power i found, so just work on jumping up in your gaps and after a while you will get better at them but they take alot of time (Y)
Mr Motivator
Well I make my PB today. You have to hop up a wall and then gap accross to annother so its purley static. I've been trying this gap for a good year and finaly made it. First attempt i did all the hoppy hoppy to the edge and leaned back and then exploded off and cleared it.. just. Then second time I took a run up, wheelie hopped onto the top of the wall and powered from there using momentum and speed and cleared it just fine and kept it to backwheel. Hmm still prefer the old one hop to the edge though, meh. Il keep practicing, even though they wear me out a beast. Cheers for the advice, Sam
munkee
You dont go flat, you need to imagian your aiming for a landing slightly higher than where you are going ← That has helped me so much! had a quick go on some pallets doing a few drop gaps and it really really helped get extra distance, infact i was looking at it thinking no way can i make it and did.... scarey shit.
