Good Quality Brake Cables And Housing.

JT!

Recommended Posts

I have an avid but my cheapo cable and housing isn't doing it any justice. So i want something a bit more ..... less restrictive.

I was going to buy that avid flapjack stuff or whatever it is, but that would have cost me £20 or something like that as i couldn't buy one housing and cable on their own, they only come in a pair, and i would be wasting more as the rear has more length anyway.

So, is there any place that sells this stuff on their own?

Thanks (Y)

I'd just get the normal slic to be honest, couldnt tell the dfifference between the two, and the linear one is a pain in the arse when its getting old and all the wire bits running lengthways along the cable fray and your trying to get it into a noodle, and there £4 more expensive.

Go Slic.

I have used loads of cables, nokon, xtr, slic, linear slic, flack jackets and to be honest, non of them felt any different to the cheapest bog standard cable from my lbs for £2.

just get some cheap cable, squirt some wd40 down and it will be totally fine.

to make my avid feel nice.

make sure cable has both caps on tghe ends.

wd40 then some thicker grease like lithium of teflon then more wd40

this melts/thins the grease and makes is really slippery.

make sure that the arm that the cable is attached to is fully down. dont pull cable through so rthe arm is up a little to make the brake have less pull = sponge

use the red adjusters to make disk have good feeling.

make sure the non moving side pad is as close as possible to the disk and the other use to make the lever pull how you want it.

thern use the torks<sp> tool you get with the avid to take off as much spring tension as possible with out it hindering the back movment. so the brake releases quick enough.

i did that with a normal 2 quid cable and my avid its so nice.

It's not that it dosn't feel nice, it's just than if i ever go riding when the waves are choppy, and theres alot of moisture in the air, the next day, it take 2 hours of riding just to get them to feel as smooth as they were. They can feel really restriced sometimes, i was looking at the flackjack, as it has those funny caps, which might have helped.

Most cables should do fine if carefully cut to size , whether for V or Cable disc brakes .

Half the battle is getting a clean cut , so as to ensure the ends of the housing are cut squarely , perhaps even some filing down to ensure a good seating in the ferrule and cable guide .

I'v got them as squarly cut as possibly really. In fact i didn't cut the housing at all, i was the right length when i got it.

I might just stick with it at them moment. But can you get avid flackjack on it's own from anywhere?

jt get nokon stuf, its the tits :S

if you are willing to pay half we could go togther and get a apir for 17.50 each, cos i need a rear 1, already got 1 upfront <_< makes my avid feckin amazing, its silky, and as light as a magura bled with water, highly recomended

saying that on my bmx my linear slick is incredibly smooth and the brake is solid, with no lube....
