fairy elephants
that area of the frame will be weaker, unless you get it heat treated aswell
colly
weaker i would imagine, but a lot depends whether a decent welder welds it, and if there is a gusset put there, like me and jamie decided to do on his there, find a decent welder if you can you will be better off in the long run.

D-L-B
ooh, you've got to heat treat it. you've got to heat treat it. you've got to heat treat it. this allways happens, someone cracks a frame and suddenly everybody's an engineer. Take it to a decent welder, see if they can cut the crack out or gusset it and then any extra time you get out of the frame is a bonus. Forget all that heat treating babble. It's obviously on it's way out anyway. Dan

JIX
When I snapped my zero around the chain stay my mate welded it, and welded on extra 3 aluminium plates around the area. It never snapped again and it is still being used. This was about 2-3 years ago.

JIX
http://www.pinkbike.com/modules/photo/?op=viewℑ=521176 Heres a picture of my old zero (seen here as a testing bike). You can see the welding and added plates just by the chainring.
modrider666
My mate got his T-pro welded at the headtube by a proffesional welder and was told that the frame will never snap again in the same place, well with the amount of abuse hes giving it anyway :)"
Floyd
Yes ben. You should be able to get it welded. It will be weaker around that area, but it should last you long enough. Chears :)

Tony Harrison
If you take the frame to some back-street half-arsed welder and get him to just run weld over the crack it'll last about five minutes. My frame cracked half way round the downtube/BB join, so I opened the crack up to about 3mm all the way along (drill bit and needle files - easy with an aluminium frame) and then got a well-respected and extremely competent welder to fill the gap and put some weld over the top, and then smooth it all off. It's lasted another 10 months now and is fine. I didn't get it heat treated as 1) it's probably not worth the effort and 2) you'd probably mess the frame up totally. If the weld is sound, it'll last a bit longer, but as somebody commented the frame will probably crack elsewhere soon anyway.
Tony Harrison
NB Look for fabrication companies in the Yellow Pages Should do as a beer-money job for cash - I paid £5 Might do it while you wait, might have to come back the next day Got a photo of the crack? Or try ebay, there are always Saracens for sale on there.
