Hiltop
right got new forks yesterday came fitted with star nut though nice and dandy. done the top bolt up and it has just pulled at it out of the fork. bit annoyed at that. so go and try to fit another and it has a really narrow diamater compared to the diameter of the star nut. so basically it wont fit and if i do ram it in it will be so bent that it wont work. are there any other options hope head doctor ? are they any good? can you get smaller star nuts? Tartridge
If your star nut pulled through, you were applying too much torque to the bolt. I fitted a set just yesterday, and no problems. Take the forks down your LBS and see what star nuts they have :- A Hope HED Doctor won't fit unfortunately.
Mark W
If your star nut pulled through, you were applying too much torque to the bolt. ← Whoa, that was weird - I'm almost certain that didn't say "too much torque to the bolt" when I clicked quote :- Anyway, I had this when I put a new star-nut in my forks. Whenever I tightened it, it just slipped up. It was a case of have a loosey-goosey headset, or pull the nut out. In the end, I put a star-nut in, then put one of the "stars" from one of our spare star nuts in on top, and that did the trick, pretty much. Just gave it a bit of extra help to stop pulling out. Anyway, it SHOULD be a tight fit getting it in. If it isn't, you'd have trouble. Basically, you can try and tap it in with a hammer and a tube or some kind, but it's more hassle lining it up than if you take it to your LBS, where they should have a little tool which is like a dome with a tube out the back, and a little spike poking out of the dome. Basically, it follows the shape of a star-nut which has been pushed in, and the tube out the back keeps it all aligned. Easy peasy! But the star nuts that come with the Echo forks are a good fit, and the correct size for their steerer tubes.
