MadManMike
To solve a dispute, what is faster: 1.4 Clio RT (The mk I's) -or- 1.3 Corolla GI (The old shape ones)
rocktrials
corolla
MadManMike
That's what I thought, but I bet parts are hard to come by :( I'd love the 16 valve GTI but the insurance is sky high!
CBProductions
www.parkers.co.uk - will give you exact specs on both. But is it faster in a straight line, through a corner ? Doesn't matter what is faster if one can't handle you might as well be in reverse. I would say the corolla as they did a rally spec one and it was quite a winner. MadManMike
Did they do a rally Corolla? I know they did with the newer bubbley shape one but I don't remember the old square-type ones? Well anyway, yeah they handle really well, I know someone that has a GTI. I was purely thinking about off the lights acceleration. Being a 1.3 I know it won't be super quick, but i'd like the fastest car possible for my budget. Plus I just love the old Corollas, most people don't but I like the retro sexyness :(

MadManMike
ROUGHLY £700 - £900 I've seen one around my area, white 1.3 gi £395 but i'm a bit skeptical about cars that cost half the money my trials bike did :(
rocktrials
few words - polo mk3 gt, under £1000 in your price range easy, 1.3 good insurance and nippy.

011001000110010101110010
Tic you can't advertise on here! Parkers only go on what the manufacturers tell them. Not in practice.
MadManMike
LOL Parkers didn't have old Clio's or old Corolla's on there anyway :( Looked for Polo GT's over lunch, they seem rare? What's the 0 - 60 in one of those?
rocktrials
they not so rare, take a look on www.porka.net in for sale, or ebay, they usually crop up.....nice too, my mate has had one for 2 or so weeks....very nippy. edit: dont know about 0-60, soz mike, yet they will be good. MadManMike
Cool.. I realise it won't be super quick but for a 1.3 what can you expect? Unless you whack a Garrett turbo on it :( I like the look of 'em too!
rocktrials
well they are good for a 1.3, a quick tap ont accelerate will whip your head back :( for speed......G40, 1.3 turbo charged (eaton charger) which are the same ones used in new minis i think. they go like stink no doubt. look proper sweet too. JTM
I dont know your age or insurance status, but for a 1.4, you cant get much better than the 1.4 fiesta SI. Although its hard to find one not plagued by rust in the arches (it IS a fiesta after all) but in your price range im sure your expecting a bit of that. They also look real nice and I THINK have the uprated semi-racing seats of the 1.6 SI.
MadManMike
Thanks for the advice mate, but I really don't want a ford. Not my cup of tea at all... Thanks for the idea though :(
JTM
I can understand that due to their problems etc as everyone says. BUT it works both ways, they break more, but parts are WAAAAYYYYYYYY cheaper than jap and other foreign stuff. Out of the cars mentioned ^^^ Id probably go for the polo. The best shape kind, where they started looking like modern cars, flat back etc. From about P reg onwards I think??? I really wanted one of these when I got my escort. The just dont break, VWs are great. I think old Clios are horrible lol. And they are dinky and french, never good. Never looked at a Corolla though, that could be your original and best bet :( You didnt ask for my opinion but you got it lol ^_^
rocktrials
mk3 polo gt, stopped at L reg. and thats the car you want.

Cheers Rocktrials and all that advised.. much appreciated.. I'll post a pic in a few months when I get the car :(

toxicturky
if you fancy driving around in a car with the protective capabilities of thinly sliced brie....then yeah go for the clio, light weight and nippy, small too which makes it fun, the corrolas japanese so its got a certain amount of credability but as said before, spec parts are like hens teeth, parkers have all the main problem that the cars have, if you want speed and that what means a lot to you then yeah get one of these cars but for me a nice german solid chunk has more of an appeal as its a quality car, if u got the money for insurance for one of these then why not think along the lines of 316 or summit, the slightly older ones are nice too, black is best lol, gangsta, heavy metal, class all good Mark. oh yeah, i have a polo too, a new 1.0l one te he, nice for a litre, bit of a downgrade from my 1.6i jetta RIP ;-( Edited June 15, 2005 by toxicturky
Prawny Baby
well they are good for a 1.3, a quick tap ont accelerate will whip your head back :) for speed......G40, 1.3 turbo charged (eaton charger) which are the same ones used in new minis i think. they go like stink no doubt. look proper sweet too. ← Super charged :( ive also heard about the polo G40, but its as rare as rocking-horse shit! 1.3, super charged, and apprently stupidly quick! if it is the same charger as the new Bini cooper S, its an eaton M45. ebay is full of them! from that list id definately go with the polo, my gran had a 1.3 yonks ago, head room was AWFUL with a sunroof, but it handled well, was nippy, good interior layout, and its german-built like a tank!
