PaRtZ
OK I know most of the old tricks, grinds, tar, water bleed etc. of which I've done all three My back brake still doesn't work very well !!(Y)!! I dont have a booster because I cant find one that fits my Monty X-lite. The standard magura one or the RB booster (which is the one I've always wanted ) Im running a profile hub with Koxx Try-all rim. I've got a bit of tar on one side and and a light grind on the other. The brake does stop me, but its not very "Instant" if you know what I mean. So can I have some booster suggestions and or brake enhancement suggestions please Thanking you
Swize
Try harsh grind either side and a good set of pads eg.. plazmatics or koxx bloxx (Y) . Have a look in the pad reviews. Hope this helps Sam
JT!
Yeah, harsh grind, then good blocks. The a booster is in order, not sure which one though.
philking
Why have you only ground one side? (Y) Try grinding both sides as has been said and invest in a good pair of blocks. Also let it bed in. i.e once set up well do not faff around changing the position of it.
dave33
sounds like ur got air in the brake, check that the pistons/pads move as soon as you press the lever.if they dont re-bleed the brake. when you say you cant find a boster to fit do you mean rubs on the tyre or wount fit the mounts? SQuiT-man
I got a monty xlite/221 2004 (i think its an 04, anyway..), dont they have a booster built into the frame? Does the brake feel spongy at all? My brake was spongy so I bled it thoroughly with water lastnight and it feels really nice. If perfectly bled, your lever should go rock solid the instant it hits the rim, it should be really definitive the moment it hits the rim. Perhaps you have oil on your rims? Try cleaning them down with a degreaser, then using some cort of soap to get rid of the deposits left by the degreaser itself- you will probably find you will clean off tonnes of grime you never thought you had on your rim surface! Then when it has dried, re-apply the tar (i find it works better on a smooth rim, so apply it on that side), which if there is no oil on your rim, should lock your wheels INSTANTLY, with no modulation at all. Hope that helps, Scott
PaRtZ
Well thanks for all the advice. I got it working now but i cheated and just put a bit of tar on the other side. It hasn't stuck to the rim yet either so (Y) lol Ill probably get some bloxx though
SQuiT-man
Ill probably get some bloxx though ← Bloxx will rip through your grind on a try all rim. It might be ok to use on grinds on other rims, but on a grinded try-all rim, the grinds will last no time. What about plaz?
mat hudson
just put some shit shifter on the smooth side of the rim, dont wash it off, go ride
Waynio
why dont you try putting oil back in your brake for starters????? then take the pads out of the pistons and clean them up. so they dont have the black crap on them, then you should be ok.??..?? Waynio......................... people who put weater in ther brakes may find it returns faster but it doesnt lock up aswell!!! iv tried it before and when i used a brake with water in at koxx days afer i had broken mine the brake didnt work at all as well as my brake with oil in (mind you i suppose people who put water in must think that some where in the instructions it says *NOTE please use water inthe brake at the 1st opportunity to bleed it as it will be so much better than the recomended MINERAL OIL) :P" :) :P :)" :P well my thoughts any way. Also, i dont feel that it makes my brake any better, it feels too light at the lever. Edited June 9, 2005 by scunnytrials
SQuiT-man
There is no reason for water to make your brake lock not as well, think about it. The only difference with water really would be that it is very very slightly less compressable, so your efforts on the lever are slightly more direct through to the pads hitting the rim (as it doesnt compress the fluid quite so much in doing so). If there was any problem with your brakes, it would be elsewhere..

I think not...
Al_Fel
There are some decent echo boosters out I know for a fact selectbikes have got loads of them too. PM total trials he's got a few second hand ones to sell aswell. Edited June 9, 2005 by Anal_Teflon
SQuiT-man
Would they continue to make money after the brakes had been sold if they had not said use MAGURAs' OWN mineral fluid. I think not... ← Exactly. Also, as it is being used worldwide, they would have a LOT of cases with people's maggies freezing in the winter, which means a lot of complaints and angry customers, and possibly loss in more business/profit (which is what basically every company wants really). Using mineral oil solves this problem without being as toxic/nasty as normal brake fluid (as it is likely kids, etc will handle it at some point)
fairy elephants
mineral oil is also not going to get affected by the system heating up under heavy braking, like what is produced in DH XC etc... Remember that magura's are not trials specific. I'm running water and antifreeze in mine, and have had no problems :)
CurtisRider
mineral oil is also not going to get affected by the system heating up under heavy braking, like what is produced in DH XC etc... ← really? so how come hope, hayes and most other manufatuers use dot? and why do cars and motorbikes use dot? sorry not questioning your intelligence, just confused.... Mark W
Hope now sell their brakes with optional mineral oil compatible seals, for people who care about not stripping the finish off their bike if they drip fluid onto it accidentally, or are more environmentally friendly... Or wanna use water in a Hope disc brake, I guess (Y)
