rocktrials
the other week i was at school riding at dinner, and my front hose decided to loosen, so lost my front brake.....(and other time i went to school at dinner crank arm fell off). anyway......tried at lbs with oil...they were cack and so attempted to bleed with water.....1st off, so much easier....., 2nd, i was thanking god that there wasnt a leak anywhere, and 3rd when i set it up....holy lord, i was so impressed,, my guess is that oil can compress so feels squiggie, yet water doesnt compress so its just on and off???? it feels so much better, im thinking of doing my back brake for the summer. any downsides to water? can it mess your brakes? i wouldnt think so if theres no air getting in as it needs oxygen to rust. oh yes, and i tried tar on my back rim.....i had so much faith in my back brake then!!! gotta get me some.  :P (Y)

Impacted.
Oil doesn't compress either, my guess is that you had a crap bleed with oil that's all.
tipsy Jock
Water is thinner and less compressible (possibly incompressible??) therefore gives a snappier more solid feeling lever. Pete
mink
Water is less viscous than oil, so gives a snappier feel. There are hundreds of topics on this if you have a search
Tomm
Water yes (Y) Tar No  ← Haha. I am quite tempted to go back to riding red pads and tar. You would get an amazing brake, cheap, no fagging about with grinding etc. Wouldn't work in the rain, but meh, I rarely ride in the rain anyway. Carl
Water yes (Y) Tar No  ← water yes  Tar YES! My back brake got water and it fells really good and with a little grind and tar it's just fantastic my skills are improving a bit ever time i ride because i got faith in my brake :P Carl :D
Luke Drewery
Water, understandable if you dont have the proper fluid  Tar, in sumer, yes! Using tar in winter is a definate no no, it just turns to residue, however in summer it is perfect as if you are like me and love manualing and other such moves a grind eats your pads away and is too noisy. Tar on the other hand makes your brake awesome if you put a little on and it wears off if you dont want it on your rim anymore (Y)

JT!
No liquids compress, like said above you probably had a crap bleed, with air in it. Water will frezze in the winter, you have that to look forward to. But thats only the real dissadvantage.
Tomm
No liquids compress ← Well, they do with enough pressure. Whether you can make this much pressure in a trials brake with one finger, I dunno. I also have no idea how compressible magura fluid is compared to water.

Also, that was when it was stored in a thin-walled caravan, so it got uber cold anyway. It's not like it's a major drama, seeing as I don't usually ride over-night anyway. Most times, by about 9-10am it's thawed, and then it's dandy. It did freeze riding home once actually, but that was 'cos it was 11pm, and the wind chill factor was a bit savage... philking
bleeding with water workrs great. i would do it if i could be bothered, but everythings ok at the mo anyway. I think its due to the water being less viscous... possibly. I cant imagine that the oil compresses.
RyanRs
you all think riding at dinner at school is good!! well check this! ... I am a coach driver and i mainly do commuter runs to london . I get to london and am parked up by 9.30am on southwalk bridge, then i have literly got NOTHING to do till 4.30 PM, unless on the odd occasion i have a private hire job . most of the drivers sleep or go pay there bills etc. but me, i take me bike and ride london for 6 hours, almost every day(mon-fri)!! and on wednesdays me mate trav brings his bike too. And the best part is, i get paid all the way through(and the pay is fab!), minus an hour for lunch! You might think, how boring, having 6 hours every day with nothing to do, but belive me, if u sleep, ride, or go shopping, it flys by! And when it accidentally freezes...couldn't it burst the joints (around the cylinders or so) and then need a new bleed? How long have you been running on water? Just curious..I may try some day...
SQuiT-man
My maggie needs bleeding and I wanna do it with water this time, Ive decided for a while I wanted to try it out, but do I need anything special (e.g. tubes of any particular kind, or any equipment?)+how easy is it really for a first-timer? Cheers, Scott

Cheers, Scott ← you bleed it with exactly the same equipment and in exactly the same way as you would when bleeding it with maggy blood. i tend to make a meal out of bleeding it though and instead of just bleeding till the air bubbles stop coming out, ill run a whole pint of water through it.. Why?? because it gives the internals a bit of a flush through and secondly, its water, its not as if it costs anything, so therefore you can make sure its bled PROPERLY! ry
Corish
I don't want to ever hear those words in a sentence again ← Right. I'd rather have tar than a grind ANY f**kING DAY! Grinds are good yes but also kane your rim, tar is cheap, easy to get and last a decent length of time, only apply a little bit so you can hardly see it on your rim, and your brake is MINT! loud squeak, doesn't stick and holds well, bites well, yes I know tar does now work too well in wet but which idiot would wanna ride in wet? I don't so I dont find a problem with tar what so ever, maybe you prefer grinds but you cannot dis tar! corish
RyanRs
i find just a grind isnt enough for a decent weight holding lock. so i use a medium grind, then add a lil bit of tar to both sides and used it with plaz pads. it then feels no different than a grind to use but once u lock the brake, the bb would proberally snapp off the frame before the brake slips!!
