MadManMike
I am interested in putting a 35 HP lawnmower engine on my trials bike, making a mad custom type thing... Can anyone see this possible? Would it be very hard to do? I'd love to make a motor-push-bike... It would get some funny looks on the cycle lane... Any ideas anyone? Can anyone tell me who could supply a motor? Is anyone technically minded and available to help? My plan is to put the motor on the front, but I really don't know if it would work. Tomm
Make it removeable, so you can cruise to places using the motor, and take it off for riding trials  35hp is a lot for a small light trials bike though!
MadManMike
hehe that was the idea, mental speeds I want to acheive  Id love to smoke a scooter!
Will Arnold
make it so u can do trials on it too, so its like a trials motorcycle except light as fook
MadManMike
Can anyone help? like tell me the best way to make the motor move the front wheel? Best technique... I'm sure welding an engine mount wouldn't be too difficult, but making a drive system would be difficult
RicH_87
some ideas a la google.
Brian Bleech
Are you sure you want it on the front. It will ride weird with an uber heavy front end! The steering would crap! Would it be better to do this to some bag of crap bike at least first! For an engine mount I would build a mount that would attach roughly like a front panier rack. Mounting points at the top of the fork and bottom of the legs. Drive - mod a front disk hub to have a drive wheel, instead of a disk on it...maybe
Rob_P
Good idea! That first pic looks good! 35hp, thats more than my 600cc motorbike   Get some good power wheelies on it! Stick the motor in the back and stick a wheelie bar on it, you'll be sittin on the backwheel (Y)
MadManMike
I doubt a 35 HP motor would fit anyway actually, but it's gonna be fun messing about
Tom Booth
Could you not mount it on the down tube, to drive the back wheel, like a chainring on one side of the bb then the other on the drive side, like chop 2 drive side crank arms up so you can mount it to the bb and keep the chain rings, the have one on each side, so you can have gears aswel! have a chain on the non drive side of the bike from the motor to the bb, then the usual set up on the drive side. run a xc set up aswell so you acheive monster speeds!!!! burnin off hairdryers on the roads! Hope this has inspired Tom
MadManMike
The possibilities are endless, but im not the most practical person in the world, so I'm really looking to do whats easiest... I'm not lazy i'm just crap at building things... The advice is great so far though guys  I've emailed welders for prices to weld an engine mount in my area, just gotta wait! MadManMike
My overall aim is to blast away mopeds... not sure if it will, but hey it'll be fun trying
fairy elephants
My overall aim is to blast away mopeds... not sure if it will, but hey it'll be fun trying (Y) ← Well the average mo-ped must be... what?... 12HP? and they weigh alot more than a trials bike  If you can make it work then

You'll piss all over em(hopefully) make a vid when its done of you burning off a ped

mat hudson
how are you gonna slow it down, you'll wear magura pads away, especially if your keeping a ground rim, are you going for a powerful disk or somthing?? cool idea though
Mark W
FWD would mean no tricks though, due to the lack of power to the rear wheel, so it'd be uber hard to kickhop or anything with a sodding great motor over the front  If you could attach it so you have the motor in the bottom bit of the front triangle, and have it have a sprocket which drives the chain as well, you might be in business I guess, but other than that I suspect will be waffer. MadManMike
It's not really going to be for trials anyway, I'm only using a 'Cuda Ghetto so it's not really trials at the moment anyway! Purely for speed... And brake-wise: Front HS33 Rear Avid (AD7?) Not ground rims either... I admit I haven't thought it out that much but hey i'm going for it! It will be fun... The hardest bit I can see is making the motor work, the welding will be no problem. The plant is to remove the cranks and fill the BB, have the motor just above where the BB is inside the triangle, and make a cover or "fairing" for the bike. The idea is to have a chainring where it would be if there were cranks, but obviously it will be connected to the motor not the BB. Get me? Anyway, more research and help from companies is required... This WILL happen.
IOLO
BEEN THERE DONE THAT ! lol sory only messin,,, i got a VERY old lawn mower and put the fukin huge engine onto a kids bmx ! it was good and didnt take me long to finish,, i did it with no brakes no clutch and you had to push start.... first attempt the chain cam eoff then i couldnt turn the engine off, and it electricuted my bro, then got me and i dropped the bike, which stopped it..! second attemp to bro pushed me down a hill, not much happened, then the beats kiked in, and i fukin flew,,( ALOT faster than i wanted,) then the chain came off and whipped me,, then i fell onto the spark plug and got yet another bad shokking,, which made me fall off, and the bike hto a wall and stopped... dont regret it.... great project great fun !!!!! PM for advice on what to and what NOT to do... lol would be happy to help..
RicH_87
IF you ever get this to work, here's a helpful hint on how to corner on it... hehehe :)
rocktrials
like that first pic, (i had idea before i saw it) an pannier on the front which has the engine on, and a belt running down to the hub with a cog......however cog on front wont fit? do it on the back then....and somehow get (if ur single speed) another cog on the hub, which holds your engine powered chain.....powering the rear.......and u can still pedal if you want.......the pannier would be easy to take off, with the engine fixed to it, and just undo the chain???? or tie to the frame lol
IOLO
if you use a 20 tooth sprocket on the engine, then the rear one will have to be about 65 tooth
MadManMike
I've found a safer, easier alternative to the lawn mower engine. I'm going to mount a 10 HP strimmer motor onto the frame just above the back wheel, where a rubber roller grinds against the back wheel obviously making it turn. Now I know the down sides (Worn tyres, friction etc...) But this will be a lot easier and probably less likely to land me in prison or in hospital. It's also cheaper and MUCH quicker to build... Anyone agree with me?
Tomm
And lift up/down for clutch. Meh, not quite as hardcore as the 35hp is it? :)
MadManMike
Final decision made! 4HP Flymo motor is going to be used, i've booked the machine in for engine mount welding and fairing installation. I'm currently bidding on a running flymo motor on eBay, it's a fiver at the moment. This is gonna be fun :)
