give it a 3-4 week rest to be on the safe side, if it feels better before then dont ride as you might hurt it again (im no doctor or pyhsico) by the way :P

I have done mine upwards of 10 times when riding. I think it all depends how bad it was and which direction it came out in.

Did you have to go to hospital to get it put back in?

Which direction did it come out in? Sideways, upwards, downward, etc

Did you do it riding?

If you did it is well worth going and seeing a physio about it, and get some strengthening exercises to do, as once it starts happening it will just get worse and worse. I ended up having the cartelidge in mine recontructed which is not a nice as it means completely loosing the use of an arm for upwards of two months.

You can dislocate any joint in varying degree. Subluxation is a partial dislocation. Obviously, the worse you do it, the more time you need to recover, so each case is individual. I would go and see a doctor if it's troubling you.

I collided with a BMW and dislocated the shoulder downwards. Had to go to Hospital to have it put back in. It feels okish today but I am trying to find out the best way to look after it so I can get back on my bike as soon as possible.

few years back i dislocated my knee, from then on it kept doing it. in total around 4 times. In the end i had to have major surgry on it 3 knee ops in total (not good) Now i knows knees are diff to shoulders but if i was u i would talk to a sports doc maybe?

Once the joint dislocates it makes it weak so it will happen more and more, would deff at the very least rest it up for a good 4 weeks. And find out some joint exercises which might help mend the weakness?

(i know why peeps knee cap peeps now, bloody knees are painfull!!)

Has anyone here dislocated a shoulder? I have just done mine on Thursday, and am itching to get riding again. So what I woyuld like to know is how long do people find they need to rest it before they can ride again?

shoulder dislocations are common injuries, usually sustained from an impact (fall on the arm out stretched, back or front of the shoulder impact can also cause it to displace

one word of warning, if you have to have it relocated in a&e and it happens more than 3 times then you will be put on the waiting list for ligament reconstruction, a tightening procedure, andy hill had it done recently, good thing to get done before you really shred the stabilising musculo/ligament structure beyond repair. but the surgery is really effective and common these days

however if it pops out and goes back in again then a series of rehab and strengthening exercises can help to stabilise it again

at the end of the day, rest for min 4 weeks and up to 8 is the only thing you can do along with gentle initial rehab to prevent weakness of the joint while resting and also some stregthening work later on after about week 3

however before you go ahead and do anything with it, get it assessed (disclaimer attached!!!)

my shoulder was dislocated maybe something like 20 times and i went to surgery where they put two screws/anchors in and i wasn't able to ride for a few months and the doctor said full recovery takes 6 months. anyways there have been no problems whatsoever since then and i also started some basic muscle workout at home to keep the muscles in good condition. i think especially rubber band moves that strenghten the muscles around the shoulder are really beneficial. i would recommend resting for some time and then starting to do muscle workout either at home or gym unless you already do some and continuing that for the rest of your life.

i have dislocated my shoulder many times and suffered from plenty of subluxations, but the dislocation always popped back after a min or two, the worst being babysitting with my gf and had my arm around her and i moved forward and it dislocated, much to the horror of my gf and her sis (and im sure the baby's parents if it had not of gone back in)... After doing some physio work on it, it dislocated and stayed out!! the muscles get a bit toighter and so it pops and stays out. I've been doing press-ups and going down the gym and lately it hasnt happened, but my shoulder is still so crap when i have my arm in the air...

It hard to get the hospital to know that it happens because it pops out and then goes in and after numerous times of this happening, i dont want to sit in a hospital for 5 hours and then get told to rest it... Anyway i sufer from anterior dislocation (pops out downward/forward) and crepatis (which is the roughening of the cartelidge of the joint after many dislocations). I really want a shoulder opperation!

Rest it!! although i found the resting period gets less and less the more it happens (and it will unless you do exercises) which is something to look forward to.... maybe...

Thansk for all the advice. I have decided to listen to the pros (Doctors) and you lot and rest it for a while. It feels ok, but I have torn some muscles for it to have come out, so I guess these need time to heal. Plus I have chronic hayfever now so going out riding in all that pollen is for me like being stuck in that Tokyo subway when the sarin gas attack happened. I will have to do some physio soon as well with a giant elastic band, I guess it should come quite good though as being a trials rider the rotator cuff is already well developed.
