Use of it, internet, msn, photoshop, just generally pissing about on it.

What can u recommend. Needs wifi those so it can pick up connection from my computer when i'm at home.

I would say it doesn't need to be that good, but it does, i tend not to have shit stuff haha, and id like to keep it that way.

So Pro's and con's of having a laptop. i know the cons out number the pro's considerably, but just give me you view.

Alwayts wanted one and now i have saved a nice lil money tree in garden, and its got a laptops name written all over it.

Brands..what should i look out...??

pentium bollox and all that i don't understand..what is best..

I think you get where i'm coming from, i'm not at all computer logistic, so just need pointing in the right direction.

Cheers People

You want good? Alineware. Simple as that. But dig deep into your pockets mon frere as you will need some hefty wads of cash.

"You want overpriced?" <-- More like it. Seriously, there's no point looking at Alienware unless you're wanting to play the latest games on a laptop which costs a bomb. Which is a pretty stupid idea really anyway. I've heard good things about IBM thinkpads...

Toshiba :P they make laptops for a lot of other manufactures anyway and are generally the best.

Friend just got a 3.4 P4, 512ram, 60gb hard disk etc etc from pc world for £700 quite a bargain for the spec. With laptops specialist computer shops ain't always cheapest some of the high street shops have some good deals too.

I've got a laptop in my room which I use ALL the time, infact i'm using it to write this message! :-

I hardly ever take it anywhere, its all set up in my room nice and snug! I've got all the USB ports I need, connected to my printer, speakers for music, camera, external hardrive!

I just wanted a laptop because they take up so much less space and are cheaper!

Mine is a packard bell, 256Mb RAM, 40Gb internal hardrive, spent extra £120 on an external 160Gb hardrive which is more than enough (200GB in all)

I can update the RAM to 512 for £100 then I will have a nice fast laptop!

I use it everyday and it cops with it al fine, I just hope it dosent die on me one day! lol

The laptop itself was about £700 from currys!

I use it for MSN, photoshop, internet (broadband) everything basically!

Cant go wrong with some of the new HP's, cons about laptops that put me off were:

1.Annoying to upgrade

2.You are paying extra cost for something that is not as fast/powerful as a normal pc, But i suppose your paying for it to be small and portable. This is why i just got a shuttle, well a cube.

3.The batterys can tend to die, and have a very poor life span. Often expensive to replace.

The main thing that put me off a laptop was the upgrade part, but thats only because i play alot of high fps games.

I like my Vaio, :P does everything i ask of it. has a funky screen although i pay for it with pretty crappy battery life and it weighing a ton lol. I'd go with IBM though if you have the money, my dad has one from work and its teeny weeny!

Whatever you get try and get a Pentium M, they are turning out to be really powerful and low powerusage at 21W (Y) last upt to 8 hours or something on a single charge.

Try acer or something they are usually quite good £858 buys a 1.8 Pntium M 15.4" widescreen I think with 512mb ram and an 60gb h/d (I think ill go look)

I was close on the spec.

Anyway not that overclocking a notebook is reccomended but as they are so cool (unlike the PreCooks in the Pentium 4) you could oc it and it will go to 2.3 on air :D. Dont be put off by the 400mhz FBS go check some benchamrks on it. V close to an Athlon FX55 (the 2.0 ghz counterpart) and it will be close to a 3500+ I think being the 1.5

Yeah but it is still the best, as my later comments stated you'll need alot of money for one (Y)

i would also go with apple, also if you can help it get a desktop pc not laptop. I mean the imac only has screen and keyboard.(no tower) So if you did want to take it about it would be easier, not as easy as a laptop but easier than a normall pc. You get much more for your money ! macs are nice , i ordered mine: gig of ram (Y) .woo hoo . But yer personally i think they are the way to go. if you go on apple.com/uk and order it from there you will get a student discount and they have as deal on imacs!

Hope this helps.

There's a decent one in Aldi at the minute.

No really.  I was looking the other day looks good spec and cheap.  Got my PC from there as did others form here and they are really really good quality and value.

The problem is, there's more to laptops than simply the spec. Stuff like weight/size, how noisy it is (Some cheap laptops are really noisy, just ask JTM) and how reliable they are.

what is wifi actually?

DAN

Wireless internet. People seem to be pimping laptops as "wifi ready" or something like that, without telling people that you can turn any laptop into a wifi laptop by adding a £10 PCMCIA card...

Yeah I originally got a Medion (actually a good brand) laptop from Kwik save and the noise was intolerable. I took it back and I got a far nicer loking and sounding Acer one from commet. And Ive had no problems since! It does look much nicer in a room than a cumbersome PC but its not to everyones taste.
