Loose connectors inside your pc?  check that they are all firmly pushed in.

yeah its not that they do still work, when i put a cd in it makes whirring noise and cd moves its just there is no icons or anything else like that :)

What model drives are they?

Chances are you need drivers for them. Did they work before, but then you turned the pc on and then they decided to not show up?

yeah thats exactly what happened mate. but i have checked for updates of drivers but there is none.

I had the problem once and it was loose leads.  I wouldn;t dismiss my solution if you havn;t tried it.  Disk drives should be detected by the motherboard, no drivers needed.

sorry i have tried it i have checked all the wires at the back of my computer, is there something im not doing?

He's talking about the IDE cables on the inside of the pc, the huge ribbon ones. If you open up your case, you'll see the ones i'm talking about and just push the connectors into the motherboard and the actual disc drive drive, and see if it makes a difference.

Remember: Only do this with the computer turned off as changing any of the plugs whilst the computer is on will potentially cause alot of damage!

yeah done but still no drives.here is information it says about them:

Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)

Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device.

Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)

In that case, open up your computer, take out the power cables (4 pin cables) from the drives, boot into windows with the drives unplugged, leave it to all load up etc etc, then turn off the PC again, plug the drives in then boot up again, and it should auto-detect and reinstall the drives. If it doesn't do that, you have a shagged drive.

You have drives missing? As in what? Two CD-ROM drives gone?

If there's two drives both gone at the same time, it's pretty unlikely that they would have both worn out at the same time. Like Danny said, try changing the IDE channel, if you reckon you're up to it. In these cases, Knoppix is an invaluable tool. Basically if you run Knoppix (Linux-based OS that boots directly from a CD), and can access your drives, it's a problem with windows (I.e. software), whereas if that still has the same problem, then it's a hardware problem most likely.

However, if your CD-ROM drives are fooked, then you might have trouble booting Knoppix :o

Linky - About a 700mb download - OK if you're on broadband. But again, you might have difficulty burning it to CD if your drives are broken. Maybe you should download it on another PC :o
