Driving License

How old do you have to be to apply for a provisional licence for a car?

Cheers

Smithy

Is it 16 or 3 months before you 17?

One company round here offers lessons to 12 year olds that are able to reach the pedals.

I think the provisional though is 16 and 1/2 not completly sure

The current Laws in the UK Thursday, May 26, 2005

You cannot start to drive a car until your provisional driving licence has been accepted and in your possession. If you are in receipt of the higher rate of disability, you can start to learn how to drive when you reach your 16th Birthday otherwise you will have to wait until your 17th Birthday.

17 then!

Thanks,

Callum

Yeah, so it's pretty ueless to apply when you're 16. Unless you want to go out learning bang on your 17th birthday.

First lesson on my bday :D

Who ever says you can't get a provisional untill 3 months before 17th is b/s...If you want to ride a moped (16) you still get the same provisional license!

you have to be 17 with a provisional to start actually driving a car with someone else (with a license held for 3 or more years)

As for applying for it, somewhere between 16 and 17, allthough its not a lot of use before your 17 other than ID to show your not old enough for alcohol :)

technically you can drive whatever age you want, near me theres a place called lightwood (sheffield) and its an ex-airbase and its private land which you pay £5 for an hour to drive on, theres loads of open space and then theres lots of different lanes and such, its good toget you started. but yeah the age limit there is 15.

you can apply at 16 and receive it when you are 16, but you have to wait until you are 17 to drive. e.g lessons / test, however if you have a disability then you are allowed to drive at the age of 16.

I'm sure I have posted this before?

My understanding is that you can only apply for it when your 16 is you are disabled in a way that lets you start driving at 16. If you not, it's 3 months before your 17.

I applied for my provisional a few months before I was 16 because I done my CBT (50cc motorbike / scooter test) on my 16th birthday..

Then when I was 17 I got rid of the bike and started driving cars!

The only bad thing about getting it early is the picture.. I'm 18 now, but 15 in the picture on my driving lisence.. I look well different in it!
