Mr Motivator
My B&Q arc welder has packed in for the final time so I need a new one. I considered a gassless mig, but after having a go with my friends im not so sure about it. So, found this at a local-ish shop; Sealey Arc Power Welder 150 XTC input voltage - 240v welding current (amps) - 40-150 electrode capacity mm - 1.6-3.2mm fan cooled - yes no load voltage - 48 weight kg - 15 This model includes an accessory pack. I mostly weld 2mm thick steel and so far my current welder has been ok with it, but what id like to know is, if you think that 40-150 amps is good enough, as I cant even remember what mine is (peeled the stickers off :turned: but its probably the same) OH yeah, iv been using 1.6mm electrodes and they seem fine but iv never got any different sizes.. think i should maybe go bigger? but dont really want too many holes as its only 2mm steel. Over and out, Sam Any help most obliged. Edited May 17, 2005 by Sam@SouthTrials
rich4130
I always remember sealey tools to be well overpriced when I looked at a catalogue a while ago. Sip one maybe? www.axminster.co.uk get yourself a catalogue.
dirtbiker
If i were you'd i'd get a mig, they're so much more controlled and easier to use. My friend got his from "MIG, TIG and ARC" in portsmouth for a very reasonable price (i think it was around £150 with a starter kit of mask, gloves etc.) :turned:
Mr Motivator
Yeah www.migtigarc.co.uk :turned: thats the local shop i was on about :) mmmm still undecided, as long as i can get a better weld than this with a mig; lol quicky weld :S
trialsking 55
how hard is it to weld like that? and where did you learn? my dad used to do metal fabrications so did alot of welding (TIG i think)
Mr Motivator
Pretty easy once you got the hang of it. I actually gas welded that up there at school ^^ but run out of gas so had to use argon lol. It ends up looking like that when you arc weld anyway apart you get loads or slag :turned:
OD404
If you are just going to be welding steel then I would suggest staying with some form of mig welder. I'm not really up on the specifics of the equipment, but you seem to have a decent shop nearby so their advice would be very useful. And finally (without wanting to sound in anyway harsh), I think there is still room for some improvement in you welding. The welders where I worked last year were producing mig welds that were extremely neat and would put some of the welds on our bikes to shame :) my efforts on the other-hand were more akin to yours :turned:
Mr Motivator
lol that was the first time id gass welded :turned: My arc welds are alot neater :) Yeah im considering a gassless mig again then. Found one for 1tonne so might get that :S
dirtbiker
Gas-less mig works out more expensive in the long run as the wire is more expensive. My welding is getting better, but I can do nice looking ones on box like that. Now try welding in a repair patch upside down inside a wheelarch :turned:
