fudge2580
Hi, My parents are thinking of buying a video camera. I am putting money towards it also. It would be used for trials and family occasions. Which type of media is better in your opinion. Bearing in mind quality and ease of editing. Thank you, Angus (Y)

Thank you, Angus (Y) ← MINI DV!!! mini dv is what everyone should buy for making trials videos (unless obviously you have bags of money). It produces high quality, digital video. Tapes aren't too expensive and it is supported by all editing software.

F-Stop Junkie
I have seen a few cameras over the years use floppy discs, writeable CDs and now DVD-Rs. I really don't trust anything that uses a mechanism that moves to write data, at least when that thing could be shaken while it writes. That includes Microdrive for my camera. The bottom line is that a good, hard shake could cause a mis-write. Also I think that these mechanisms tend to be more prone to wear and catastrophic failure. Not to mention how new the DVD-camcorders are, and hence I'd consider them unproven. That's before you even consider picture quality and the like. Stick with MiniDV
skandy32
i agree with the miniDV comments, but i voted for DVD. Few reasons: 1 )think of the lesser hassle to watch, and edit footage. No need for cables! just plonk you dvd in the player / computer!! dont need firewire to write back to cam, only a dvd drive, which most new comps have! 2 )having used a friends; the best bit is it split recordings like tracks, so watching your footage is even easier, and you dont have to wait 10mins for it to rewind. 3 )higher quality! only drawback, is, at the mo, its new technology, so it works out more expensive! probly about 2/3 quids more a dvd, compared to tapes! The cameras a good prices thought, look at the sony models! hope i helped! (Y)
