dirtbiker
I'm looking for an amp for my mini. It has a set of Alpine 120W (max) components on a speaker board under the rear seat and will have a pair of 90w (max) Kenwood 10cm speakers in the dash in the near future. I'm planning on running the amp using a 3.5mm jack to RCA lead plugged into my Ipod Mini. Sometime in the future i may buy a sub, but for the moment it only has to power the components. I've been looking at this £50 Mutant One And this £100 Alpine one Obviously the Alpine one would be better but is it really worth the extra £50? I'm only really into having the music so that i can listen to it ok (not too bothered about quality) Finally how does the amp connect to the battery, am i best to buy a wiring kit and then use my 3.5mm to RCA lead? Cheers Edited May 15, 2005 by dirtbiker
george_seamons
Yes, the amp makes a huge difference. Deffinatly buy the Alpine one. They are really good quality, and produce excellent sound. You will need to buy a wiring kit. They can be picked up off ebay for about £10-£15. Make sure you get one that is at least rated to the same as your amp, preferably more. Don't buy the amp from Halfrauds. You can get it for £75 from here The only problem with running the amp straight off the iPod is that there is no remote wire. This is a signal that the amp needs to tell it that the headunit has been turned on. As I understand it, you are not using a headunit, therefore this signal will need to be replicated somehow. It shouldn't be too hard though. It's just a 12v source that is on for a split second.
dirtbiker
I bought the Alpine one in the end and it was working fine with the remote-in connected to +12v from the battery. I decided to get a switch so that i could turn it on and off (stop wasting the battery) It had three connections so i connected one to earth, one to +12v and the other to the remote-in on the amp. Connected the -ve terminal of my battery, ooooh, pretty smoke! Basically fried all the wires going to the switch, and now the amp wont work at all. The fuse in the amp and in the +12v line didn't blow. Any ideas? Will halfords take it back if i've got the box and reciept? dirtbiker
Update: It was just a bad earth on the amp, and its now all working properly: With an RCA lead coming out and a green-lit on/off switch for the amp. (Y)
