Gapping Tech Gone "kaput"

Ok, So your at the edge of a ledge about to gap. Do you;

1. Lift the leading pedal up about 45deg, preloading it for the gap (see pic, fig1)

Or

2. Keep the pedals horizontal to the floor and just kick from that position (see pic, fig2)

Hopefully I make some sense, but whats the best way to learn as I usually just roll the first 6 inches before I leave the ledge as I do it as in fig1.

Any help appreciated,

Sam

From looking at vids of me and other riders, I'd say more like the first one (but not necessarily thinking "Hmm, that was 43°! Incorrect!" or whatever. It just basically means that as you lower the front, the pedal will naturally lift back around the stroke, so when you stamp on it it'll be nearer to the horizontal position so you can land easily, if you get me?

But yeah, like Ad said, just do what comes naturally (N) Try it, see which one works.

To be onist all that is wrong because every rider rides there bike different, just have to do what technic is best for you, also some people ride with there different foot forwards. Everybody rides different no one rides the same :) .

I would learn more to 1 than 2. It's hard to say as you don't realy go by how it looks, rather than how it feels.

first one and go down to the second one, alough it depends how big the gap is and what gear your in, an easier gear will mean you are pushin furtur (sp) down

I pull back above horizontal to do larger gaps.

i find that it really helps.

had to change my technique now i used to set off from the corner on my Justice but now i have to leave from the flat on my Pure(1080!!)

I think when i go for a gap i start like in picture one, but my crank ends up facing almost all the way down after i've kicked. Everyone seems to have a different technique for gapping though...

(ooooo my first post now ive been validated how exciting! (N) )

Some people do it differently. A guy in Lancaster who I used to ride with regularly, he used to do nearly a 180* kick. His gaps were pure pedal power. But he was really good at gapping, could do 7ft at least on his Pace. But more people do a lot less. To be honest, I don't reckon I actually pedal any more than the average backhop. I do a more powerful stroke jab almost and a big jump. The power should come from the jump, rather than the pedals. Although when I'm in the air, I often spin the pedals a bit further round. But I don't think that matters (N)
