Dr. Nick Riviera
well firstly , i know i need a lockring tool and a chainwhip to get it off the hub , but once its off how do i split it down into cogs and cassette spacers? as i need to get an 18t cog off of it. thanks (on a bt of a help seeking spree tonight)
AdamR28
Which cassette do you have? Most of them are held together with three allen key bolt pins, which can be removed easily.
Dr. Nick Riviera
i think its a sora? its definetly shitmano anyways edit: can i use the lockring from it to hold a singlespeed kit on? or do i need to buy a new one? Luke Drewery
There should be three allen key pins on the back that you undo and slide out, i think they are 2mm. If you have a cheapo cassette then may not be able to take it apart though. Oh and the lockring will fit a singlespeed kit, its no diferent
Dr. Nick Riviera
isnt the smallest cog attatched to the lockring on a cassette?

Tomm
Sometimes the 3 pins are actually rivets or something, rather than allen bolts (Probably on cheaper cassettes). Drill them out :-

Drill them out :- ← Yep, my deore one did, I think I filed them off rather than drilling, so If you have a grinder, make life easier. Dr. Nick Riviera
the thing is im going to be doing this on a ride :- tog get an 18t cog
rich4130
ah right. chances are it may not have an 18t cog. Get yourself a DX cog mate, much better, chain will not slip off, wider base etc, hmm not sure where you can get 18t's seperatly though... I did have one that I could of sent you, but I think a mates using it :S If not, just take a file with you, theres only 3 little pins to file down, be easy enough. Dr. Nick Riviera
ahh it does as its my current gear. ill scout around failing that ill just use the cassette Edited May 11, 2005 by daahnhillaaaa
onzamad
well on every cassete i hve tken apart and cleaned (cheap ones) there have been 3 allen bols on the back holding the min part of the cassette togeather, but the 2 smallest chainrings are not atached to the part held togeather by the allen bolts, they ar ejust held in place by compression from the lockring. so just whip the lock ring off, take the cassette off, remove the little allen screws and bobs your aunty, your cassette is apart. IMO though, if you want to go single speed ( i assume thaats your plan) use the 18t sprocket and the spacers) i would get the dmr single speed kit, ive got one and its great, looks good too. Caleb
If they are the rivet type pins i used a centre punch and knocked them out took about a minute.
SebJT
If your not bothered about the other sprokets, take a hammer and a chisel, just hit the chisel into the rivits a few times and they'll break and the whole cassette falls to sprokets and a spacers Seb
