Nick Garland
Hi, I was woundering what gearing everyone uses. Not the ratios or anything the type, easy, medium or hard. Those gear ratios in the poll are just an idea so people can guess roughly what theirs is similar to. I am just curious as I used to run 16-14, then changed to 16-13 and found that most of the moves were easier with the higher gear.
Burton
I guess this applies to stock only then?

Trebor
I use 16-14, which is the same as 22:18 if I'm not mistaken, it seems OK, I kinda wish that I went for 175mm cranks for that little bit extra power :(
dave85
20:16 was on 22:16 until friday so i guess its the same as 22:18 now??? ← Tis a little harder, halfway between 22:17 & 22:18 :(
Nick Garland
Ok I dont think I explained what I meant. to be honest I dont care what ratio's you are running. I was curious as to what sort of ratio, ie, easy medium or hard, not the actual ratio. As I was thinking about maybe changing my ratio. If you get me. Also what sorta advantages do you get from easy medium or harder ratios?
monkeyseemonkeydo
18:15 :( Feels about right for me. Can get the power for short run up stuff and also gives enough power to do big gaps (pedal and static) Dave Edited May 8, 2005 by monkeyseemonkeydo
ScotchDave
22:17, I like it, doesn't take too long gettin places, but also spinny enough for trials. :(
colly
22:17 bit of power for big steps and big gaps. :(
N.Wood
Medium...22:18 for me. 175 cranks i think :( With a King.
RyanRs
im 22:17 with a fixed chain(no mech), was 22:18 with a rear mech and tryed 22:17, but it felt too heavy, but withou the mech, it feels ok (dont no why?) you really notice the quicker pedal response without a mech! Janson
18:15 with 175 mm cranks. Perfect for everything.
STEVE-0
I was wondering about gear ratios the other day and it seems everyone with a higher gear looks so much smoother than people with low gears. I think everyone should learn to ride in a higher gear because then theres more potential but i use 18:16 (i think, 4th gear) so i'm a bit of a hypocrite. I'll start using 18:15 if i'm not already! :(
Luke Drewery
I ride with a 22:20 ratio and i find it to be perfect. I have tried 22:16 and 22:18 but i find my bike rides ill with that kind of gearing. Some people may think that 22:20 is a little easy but i can still get power for gaps etc and my bike rides sweet with it :(
munkee
22:19 with 165 burns, would feel the same as 22:18 with 175 cranks i think

Rossi
16:14 with 165mm cranks. Wouldn't mind some longer cranks, had 165's for years. Rossi.
James_Porter
22-18 with 165 cranks. and for some reason my setup seems harder than others with the same, as people allways say my gear seems hard when they go on my bike. woop...of to buy a chain :) and rossi...copy my quote from phil (Y) (Y)
CriminalTrials.co.uk
I use 22-20 with 170 middleburns. I used to use 22-16 for ages then moved to 22-18 for a while, then i started doing bigger things and found 22-20 felt alot more comfortable and stable when on the back wheel so im stuck using that now. Still get enough power for everything like gaps, ups etc...... Danny
