It wears nappies.  The new I.E7 which is beta out in June I think is going to have tabbed browsing and half the features Firefox does now.  Wonder why Microsoft might be copying a good browser? :("

Even so, it won't compare. People use Firefox for the security and general niceness of it. Not the tabs (That don't even really work without plugins).

Firefox > *

I can't believe people still use IE, when Firefox is only 4.7Mb :)

How can someone have a wrong opinion?

I prefer IE, cos I cant be arsed getting used to a new browser, and then it be different every time I use a different PC, and have to get used to IE again.

Methinks this poll will end up slightly biased - only the people who bum FireFox will vote.

For the record - can someone list (legitimately) whats better about FireFox? Ta.

Faster

More secure (There are loads of viruses around that specifically use IE browser exploits)

Fewer popups (Inbuilt popup blocker)

Built in search bar (Google, ebay, amazon etc)

Tabbed browsing

Ability to download stuff like shockwaves/flash etc just by clicking on where the thing is.

Plugins <-- The most important thing for me - you can customise loads of things and basically make your browser much easier to use.

The only problems are on some websites (Mainly ones which don't conform to web standards), where the page doesn't work properly. But that's on about 1% of sites, if that.

To be fair, it's not very different to IE, it's hardly something you need to get used to. It does everything IE does, but better :(

Firefox has much better control over blocking popups than IE. with ie, even with spyware program installed, i still get so many popups it makes using the internet frustrating! but since i got firefox, i don't get any! you can occasionally get 1 from time to time, but you can set the browser to rember it and block it. i think the browser is more compatible with new websites, using new versions etc and its also a lot faster at loading than IE. also if you get the 'Little Fox' browser theme, it maximizes your viewing space.

As for using the browser, it is not really any different to IE. Firefox is ACE! get it!

Ry

- Is that 'faster' as in 0.05 seconds, or anything noticeable? Never had anything other than pretty much instant loading with IE personally.

- Doesn't a firewall do the same job? IE still supports SSL where necessary?

- My version of IE has a built in popup blocker too.

- Tabbed... is that like... a series of tabs at the top of the window, so you can switch through them? If so, whats wrong with using the Windows taskbar?

- That sounds like it might be handy - altho - you only do it once?

- Plugins may be helpful... but its extra downloads? What sorta things can they do? Might be where it scores some points.

I dunno, just seems like its not all that different. Plus some sites dont work properly with it.

Its like Monty doing a 106mm rear axle... you could argue its better, but in reality, its just different and causes compatability issues?

I've not had a popup for as long as I can remember... (built in IE popup blocker)

And just press F11? Or turn off some of the toolbars?

Argh, Alexx, where did your post go?! Was some interesting stuff there. Im all for it if its a better programme. Just, from what I've seen, theres no real advantages worth downloading/installing an extra program for.

No it really IS faster, not so much on things like forums, but if you go on sites where there are long rows of images, or some heavier features firefox is noticably faster, also scrolls much smoother too.

Yeah you could argue that, but firefox does have a good security system and no security holes like IE does.

popups are dead on most browsers really.

This is one of those things you don't realise how truely usefull and clever it is untill you start using it. It really is SO usefull.

They realease new versions etc all the time, it's usefull... nothing more.

There are new ones all the time, they're neat... kinda cool I guess.

I dunno, just seems like its not all that different. Plus some sites dont work properly with it.

I'd use firefox JUST for the tabbed browsing, add in the other neat features such as better bookmark system, better history system, faster page rendering, less crashes, better security etc and it just seems silly to stick with IE

On the surface they LOOK very similar, but the functionality of them is fairly different. Firefox is only 4.5 meg with a super-fast installer :(

EDIT: sorry adam, i saw your post so throught I'd re-type mine to answer your post :)

I suppose. But if you have a 106 axle and it works, then it's a good thing, right? :) I know what you mean.

I don't know how much faster Firefox is at rendering pages. On a fast PC, it's probably not really noticeable unless there's loads of pics (Firefox renders it straight away, whereas windows waits for all the images to cache themselves).

Yeah, the plugins is the best thing, for me. I have a tabbed browsing thing (makes the tabbed browsing work, where the default is no tabs), mouse gestures (can do things with the mouse to open/close windows or go forwards/back etc. VERY useful for me), adblock (Allows you to delete any adverts on web pages - like the *cough* TF banners *cough* :( ).

I dunno, if you aren't having any problems with IE, then you may as well keep it. I found that IE crashed quite a lot for me, but then I haven't used it for ages so maybe the newer versions are better (if they've updated it :( ). But I like Firefox, ever since I first got it, I've not been back to IE :)

Yeah i forgot to mention that. I hardly see any adverts anywhere now, and the download manager is much, much better, It groups and files all my downloads, giving me an overall % to whats done etc. Not a big deal if you don't download much.

In the end firefox just has 'neater' features, it seems more refined that IE. If you use IE it's not the end of the world!

I like the idea of smoother scrolling and faster rendering - thats something that does annoy me when browsing long pages full of pics. I thought it was something to do with my PC being shite (altho 2100mhz, GeForce FX5600 XT 128 card, 768 ram should be ok?), but maybe not it seems :).

I shall have to try the tabbed browsing, although I rarely have many seperate windows open, sounds like it may be useful.

Less crashing is always good - I've noticed mine does crash maybe once every few days.

Mouse gestures is a good idea too, altho it'll probably mean I'd have to stop randomly waggling my mouse about :"> :(

Alexx - How do the history and bookmarking systems work? Am I able to import my old bookmarks? (got a lot of quite important ones)

Cheers chaps... I'm sure you'll agree its a lot more useful than 'its better, get it' now, hehe.

'EDIT: sorry adam, i saw your post so throught I'd re-type mine to answer your post :)' - No probs, cheers for your answers :(

Yeah It imports everything from IE if you want it to, your cookies, bookmarks and history.

They're both pretty similar, just when you go to order you bookmarks it's in a nice big fullscreen window, and you can drag them around, put them in folder, name them etc (like your viewing them as files in windows) rather than using that anoying little organise favourites window in IE, and the history is quite similar, just with a few nice touches like your last few pages are listed in a drop down menu on the top bar, and you can change the view, search history etc...

Yeah, that little window is annoying. You can do the 'drag and drop' type thing with full screen window and folders when using IE too :)

Ahh, fair enough! To be honest it's been quite a few months since I used IE and i've forgotten how half the stuff worked anyway! :(
