1 where can i get linux from?

- all over theirs literally 100's of distributions all offering slightly different options.

2 What are the advantages and disadvantages from xp pro to a linux ?

- unless your skilled in computers then not many.

3 What would you say was the best linux to go for ?

- for a newbie probably mandrake or whatever its called now maybe even linspire

4 Do things like microsoft word ect run on linux ?

- Open office is much better but if you must run MS crap then you could run it through a windows emulator such as wine.

Linux kind of evolved from unix which has been arround since pretty much day one. It was made for programmers by programmers origionally and has lots of handy tools if you do lots of programming. For general music and internet your prob best sticking with windows.

It's fun to play about with, and there's definitely a feeling of satisfaction when you get everything set up nicely (Fstab and stuff like that). But there are no real advantages. I suppose you'd be saving £100 quid compared to WindowsXP, but I'd be very surprised if anyone can get by 100% without Windows. I just have a play when I fancy a change, but I need Windows for Premiere, Photoshop (can't get used to the gimp) and just about any game. Having said that, there are some very neat things built into Fedora (yum springs to mind). Plus it's free.

For a noob, I really recommend Knoppix. You can run it off the CD and it works really well straight from the go. Mandrake/SuSe are also good if you like your media stuff to work straight from the off. I have Fedora and it was a bitch even to get it to play MP3s.

I agree with most that's posted as well. It's great to play with, but Windows (at least to me) is more useful as a desktop. I dual boot Slackware 10.1 and Windows XP Pro, and I pretty much only boot into Slackware when I am bored!

Check out LinuxISO.org for downloads and help forums. Also, hanging out around DistroWatch can kind of help you get a feel for what's available.

Have fun!

You don't want ISO buster, you want to burn the ISO (disk image) to a CD.  Just open the file in Nero or whatever your CD burning software is :S

Done that and it doesunt seem to work?

Do i need to burn ita s a bootabul cd? Then start the pc up and boot from the cd ?

Spyware? Viruses? These are not words in the Linux dictionary :S Unfortunately they have been replaced by other more complicated words and problems. But no viruses is definitely a good thing!
