guineasmithpig
am just finishin off my gear set up have an 18t sprocket for normal trials 17t for larger rolling stuff/more power 15t (i think) for gettin around on 2 9speed spacers between each sprocket, Tiagra rear mech with spaced out lower cage to take ma KMC ss chain. all run by a friction clutch (?) thumb shifter, though i found my LH esp carbon shifter at home, which may go on one day. after a few weeks ridin with the shifter on, it doesn't get in the way, and looks bitchin with ma pink cable outers!!! hopin this setup shud make my ridin a bit easier and progressive. runnin just the 18t, i struggled on large rolling gaps, and uphill touch hops. just gotta wait 10 weeks to try it out now (Y) really, u know whether u'd b best gears or not. if u smack ur mech all the time, and only use one gear most the time, then ss wud be best. if u don't and feel ur riding may benefit from use of different gears (like me) then give em ago. i feel that only a couple o gears will give me the ratios i need, savin weight over usin a whole cassette, and still allowin me to use a dependable chain. smithy
STEVE-0
Well, i have a fully working 8 speed cassette, and a mech. However, i have removed gripshift, and cut cable down so its still in barrell adjuster. Basically means i have around 3 working gears, but have to be changed manually at with the barrell. Keeps the chain nicely tensioned too with a locked out mech. ← Man i cant believe you havent broke that, i always snap that little screw in about a weeks riding but its sweet while it lasts. I also have a fully working 8 speed cassette and gears, well kind of, gear 2 is 4 but cant be bothered to change it. Single speed is a waste of money in my opinion because i think we should all have a fully working bike and if you dont you cant ride in BIU or any thing like that, so it may be a bad idea. I must admit i would probably prefer single speed with all the less hassel but with the amount of riding about places i do i probably would just want my 8th gear back, although i can only use 7th...ahh shut up. (Y) Single speed is most probably great but for REAL riders, stick with gears.
Sikamon
single speed is fine and its fuk all slower if your fit, i was racing a rodie on my mod in london, ok if he went flat out he would win but he wasn't and i am fit enough to go flat out for a while so i had no probs keeping up. basically go SS then get fitter riding to your spots in just the same amount of time, or go SS and get a car (Y)

gazmaz03
Well i run a cassette but i have moved all the cogs around so i can run it as a singlespeed, don't like to run a proper singlespeed as it digs into the rachit which is not a good thing and it will brake the hub. Singlespeed all the way. (Y) Gaz :)" Night i'm off to bed (Y)
SebJT
i switch from single speed to gears all the time, when iam bored ill whack some gears on to gimme something to do, each have their advantages. Think is ive never found a 7/8 spd chain that holds, so i end up using a bmx chain with bigger spacing between the casette rings, and space out the jockey wheels in the mech, so you can run about 4 good gears with a strong chain, thats what ive done, no problems with it. ← I run an XTR 9spd chain, lasts me >9months a go, so couldnt say youd need more than that... single speed is fine and its fuk all slower if your fit, i was racing a rodie on my mod in london, ok if he went flat out he would win but he wasn't and i am fit enough to go flat out for a while so i had no probs keeping up. basically go SS then get fitter riding to your spots in just the same amount of time, or go SS and get a car (Y) ← And if you are just as fit with a gear twice as high you'll go twice as fast... (Y) I would consider myself a "fit" rider and i could get to my trials spots in my trials gear pretty much flat out, or a few clicks into my higher gear and i put in the same effort but i get there in half the time, for more time riding... As for the car comment, id love a car, but keeping two bikes running and keeping myself alive at uni there's no chance i could afford it :) Seb Edited May 8, 2005 by SebJT
