trials_pimp
I think he means brands....... I only use 2 makes of tool at work. Snap-on Halfords professional. Both are very hardwearing, have a lifetime garuntee, and do exactly what they say on the tin..........

Sam Nichols
I highly reccomend a pack such as this... In that you get... Hex wrench set, 1.5mm to 6mm. Cartridge bottom-bracket tool. 8 and 10mm open end wrench. 9 and 11mm open end wrench. Cable cutter. Screw-type chain tool. Crank-puller and 14mm socket. Double-ended cone wrench, 13 / 14mm. Double-ended cone Wrench, 15 / 16mm. Cassette lockring tool for Shimano® FR-5 drivetrain. Pre-glued patch kit. GearClean™ brush (not shown). 32mm headset wrench and 15mm pedal wrench. 36mm headset wrench and sprocket-chain whip. 8mm hex wrench. Triple spoke wrench. Tire levers. Which is basically EVERY tool you will ever need and it's brilliant for if you go to a comp, go away on your bike or go to a big ride - it means you can roll it up and chuck it in your bag ;) Jobs a goodun :P (ps, about £90 - real good quality though, workshop standard )

spunkey_monkey_boy
buy park, everything else is shit in comparrison...
Tomm
buy park, everything else is shit in comparrison... ← Yup, quality tools are definitely the way to go. Things like crank extractors/chainwhips and stuff like that aren't really worth buying cheaply. I know Supercycles do a big tool kit for about £30, but it'll be shit compared to the park stuff. trials_pimp
buy park, everything else is shit in comparrison... someone has never used a Snap-on tool in his life. Park are ok, not the best ive used by far............... And thats with 3 years bike trade, 3 years car trade. Seeing as bike tools dont take much abuse (if you know what your doing) I would recamend Halfords profesional for spanners. Roloff Chain tool (£250) Park Spoke keys Any allen keys, they arent expencive, so any will do.. 2 - 10mm.... Crank tool, Chain Whip (the best ive used is mine, made from an FAS power pro crank, and a shimano chain) Screw drivers, a selection, big and small, phillips, and straight., Make a headset press from either a peice of wood and a large hammer, or a very long bolt, and sone big washers. cassette tool BB tool Good side cutteres Good combinatrion plyers. Mole grips Large hammer Chisels Tap and dye kit This list could go on all night, it all depends on what sort of work you are willing to carry out. And im looking in a price range of less than £100 Thanks, Callum
trials_pimp
well then, basics, for bike repairs: 2 - 10mm Allen keys Screw drivers Hammer 6 - 21mm spanners 6 - 21mm sockets with relevent ratchets Adjustable spanner Side cutters, good ones Combination plyers, good ones Pump Tyre levers Spoke keys Chain tool BB tool - + spanner, or bar to fit Crank tool Pedal spanner Hacksaw Bleed kit Cassette tool chain whip Files Tap and dye kit That should cover you for most work you can do on on a bike, obviously you will need to buy other tools if you need them for differnt jobs. If you wanted to spend more, you could get: Truing stand headset press Bike Stand ect

The enchanted broomstick
go down B&Q or Argooos and buy one of them value toolset things, no problemos. Plus you get a heap of other tools you never wanted and will eventually use on something to bring it to life or death  stu :S
on that? u must be joking
Have a good look at Facom and King Dick tools as well. They seem to be at least on a par with Snap On from the verdicts of the maintenance techs at the company I work at during the hols. Best thing to do is probably go down to your local engineering spares supplier and have a word with them. They'll know what's good for what you want to pay (assuming you want quality stuff - a decent 1/2" socket set will cost at least a hundred quid for a decent size range). Has anyone seen my shoe?
Would something like this do? Thanks, Callum
Tomm
Would something like this do? Thanks, Callum ← They will probably be pretty shit quality, but if you're not a mechanic or something, they'll probably be fine. Although you probably won't need all of that, so it might be worth trying to find a smaller set, with higher-quality tools for about the same price. Also, bike tools like BB tools won't be included in that set so you'll have to buy them separately.
spunkey_monkey_boy
Would something like this do? Bondy
personally i wouldn't go near that!!! really mate i'd just go buy yourself a decent set of allen keys and then as you find you need tools go an buy them, theres no point in having a massive tool kit that you don't use half of... ← exactly, callum you just mainly need a chain tool, allen keys mainly 8,5,4,3mm, ratchet with 15mm socket for your cranks, adjustable spanner, crank extractor, tyre levers for your bike, if you need any other tools just go out and buy them if you really need them, no point spending £70 on a load of tools of which half you will hardly ever use or even if you did need them on rides other people will more than likely have them :- or if your at home and you need them borrow someone else's like mine or someone elses.... I only take allen keys, tyre levers, crank tool and screwdriver to tighten freewheel on rides as ive never had to use anything else (Y) Edited May 2, 2005 by Bondy
Sam Nichols
Would something like this do? Thanks, Callum ← Like people have said... The quality will be shit and you won't even use half the stuff there... Plus, the ironic thing is you'll have a huge set like that with far too many tools you could ever use on a bike, but, you'll also be missing most of the tools you NEED to use on a bike... I'm thinking cable cutters, bb tool, crank extractor, chain tool, chain whip, headset press, spoke tool etc etc Basically if you want a set, get pedros, park or something along those lines - make sure its a bike specific one!
