Luke Drewery
Hi, ive just got my avid mechanical front disk with 185mm rotor and xtr lever, with fibrax cable. I set it up just as the manual said to, and ive been for a little ride to bed it in. At first the performance was poor, but all of a sudden the pads began to bite really well and im quite happy with the performance. However, ive noticed that the pads are rubbing slightly on the side that moves in when you pull the brake. In the manual it says the locate the pads with the rotor in a 1/3 2/3 ratio. However i found the brake was better when the gap was even on either side. I was just wondering how everyone else sets their avids up? Do they go by the manual or is their any 'secrets' on how to set them up? I was just wondering because i dont want to ride with my brake if its set up badly...Any help would be very much appreciated (Y)
Tomm
I tend to go with "if is isn't broke, don't fix it". In fact a lot of the time it's more of a "even if it is broke, don't fix it" approach, but that's another story. I set my Avid up just like the instructions say to, it's not difficult (Y)
Hobnobs
Set mine up using the instructions, even with a slightly buckled rotor, it was still gravy. Bedded it in with muddy water, better than any other disc brake ive ever felt.
Luke Drewery
Ive set mine up using the instructions too, i bedded it in by general riding, lots of front wheel gaps. It now bites well sweet, it still cant be bedded in fully though because ive only had it working for about two hours!
Mr Motivator
1. get your self a bucket or large cup etc 2. fill it with cold water 3. go get your bike 4. chuck the water over the rotor and caliper, soaking everything 5. take your bike out into the street (dont touch the brake yet) 6. ride as fast as you can in your weeny trials gear (still dont touch the brake yet) 7. at peak speed, and only at peak speed, grab that brake like a futher mucker untill you hear a gay noise 8. stand back and admire your work, it is bedded in! This is the way I bedded mine in, works everytime. Sam.. I HAVE helped (Y) Edited April 28, 2005 by Sam@SouthTrials

Mr Motivator
nah you only need to do it once.. but DONT ride around with the brake on and then put water on it, as that doesnt work!
scott-mad
hi there, i use my own method to do mine!hehehe loosen off the two bolts that srew into the black mount and pull the brake as hard as possible this gets the caliper perfect inline with the rotor.then tighten up the bolts and just play around with the two knobs that move the pad in and out then with the barrel adjuster on the lever to get rid of any cable slack, works a treat. hope this has helped if not feel free to ask, i guess! Tomm
With my Avid I just boshed it on and started using it. No fancy downhill bits, no water, just a bit of trials. And it's been nothing but amazing.
