Computer Help

Right, I have a laptop, and I am getting a desktop to store my stuff on (Like a hidden server, but not connected to the laptop at all)

I want to use the laptop to view the desktop, but i'm not sure how. At work I use a KVM switch to view my computer or the server (I'm the administrator) but i'm not sure how you'd do it on a laptop, is it the same? Just a simple KVM switch?

Thanks in advance...

Mike

WinVNC.

This program is simple to use, and you can set the server up with a username and password system. Install the program on both the laptop and desktop and you'll be able to access the desktop via network and control the computer using the laptop.

If they're gonna be networked, then use this - You get the other PC's desktop in a window on your PC. But I'm not sure what you mean if you're not connecting them together. Wireless?

I think he means he wants to use his Laptop as a KVM. So he can flick a switch and instead of his keyboard, video and mouse contolling the laptop, it's controlling the the desktop. I don't think it is entirely possible on a laptop, but it might be.

KVM switchs are usually used to control a number of servers using one keyboard, mouse and monitor.

It's definitely feasible with a network connection between them - use the VNC. Otherwise I think not...

Yer, certainly if he wants them networked, just not in the way that I took it, the KVM way. I guess we're gonna have to wait for him to reply to clarify some things (Y)

Poet - you are correct, I didn't want to network them, just wondered if a KVM would work. If it wont then I'll fork out for networking gear, just a KVM is £20 and the network gear would cost more so wanted to save pennies...

Thanks for the info so far.
