Hoping not to sound like a broken record. I'm a fan of Mk4 fiestas.

Firstly the bike carrying issue is sorted (some other hatches aren't as good as this!)

gallery_201_104_1091474421.jpg

Other aspects:

  1. First decent Fiesta - leap in interior styling and ergonomics and Engines (Zetec) at this point in time across the Ford range. Better interiors compared to hatches from other manufacturers (compare with Peugeot of same age!)

  2. Many about to choose from. Mk4 started in 1995-96. Get a top of the range specced one, 1.25L Zetec engine (avoid the old 1.3L) 5 doors, power steering, electric windows, dark coloured interiour if you can (doesn't mark) Bound to be some for sale in your local paper.

  3. 1.25L Zetec engine is great to drive (plenty of poke and good fuel economy and lasts (mine has just done 100k)

  4. Cheap parts (My local garage said they are the cheapest he's seen for brake for example)

  5. Reliability: Came out highly in a recent long term survey I saw.

  6. Cheap to insure (Compare to the boy racer's favourite the Mk2 Golf!)

  7. Lots of low mileage examples around since it is a popular ladies car (Better not to be a favourite with Boy racers or you'll be paying more than the car is worth on insurance) - Admittedly, motorway miles are better than short journey miles (to the shops the other end of town - which ladies tend to do!) But provided it seems mechanical sound, then you'll naturally get many 10s of thousands of miles extra out of it (think 10,000 miles a year on average) before the engine gives up. Some engines die before 100,000!

You could pick one up for around 1500 or less even. I've had a few cars, and driven many more, and would definately buy an identical replacement when this one dies!

The Mk5 has the sharper looking headlights, but being newer may be out of your budget.

Steve

seconded  (Y)

Is it just me or when ever I see something about a mini cooper it's about restoring it, changing something on it, getting it passed it's mot, avoiding rust, changing the gasket or something along those lines...

... maybe not the best car if you just want something cheap and simple to get from A to B ?

I've got a 1.4 Clio RT, does me grand. Fit 2 bikes in the back easy and is pretty nippy. I'd post a pic but it's ditched (even though I washed it Sunday (Y) ), raining and I'm too damn lazy (Y)

Cost £300 (bargain)... had it resprayed, alloys etc... altogether come to about £600-£700 (my dad has many friends in the bodyshop trade :- ) Insurance is just under £1700.

the old honda civic's ive just got myself a H reg one which i got for £80, theres nothing wrong with it and its gonna be my first car, insurance kills a bit at £1787 but its a 1.3 16v so its pretty damn quick aswell.

a renault megane around an M reg is quite good aswell, they arent too bad on insurance and thats for a 1.6!

The 1st car made was a Chrysler Horseless Caridge, the 1st production car was the Ford Model T.

But seeing as you want a car a bit newer......

Avoid French cars, they fall apart, are unrelaible, and look shit. The build qulity is crap, and they have the noticable hadicap of being french.

The New mini is for poofs, and is just a heap of crap, if you want one, get a Proper mini.

If you want all out reliability, get a japaneese car, they are way ahead in this field.

Avoid Rovers, dont really need to explain that one.

If you want cheap to run, and some reliability, with readily available parts, get a Ford. The Older, the better :) Pre 80s are the best.....

Corsas just need to be set on fire, as they suck ass.

You need to decide exactly what you want out of the car.

Reliablity

good MPG

Cheap/easy to repair

Looks

Performance

Cheap insurence

Space for bikes

Features

Price

Once you have figured out whats more important, you can then choose a car.

If you have lots of money, and want good perfomance, and fuel ecconmoy, get one of the New Ford TDCi (Turbo Diesil Commonrail Injection)

They have tonnes of Torque, and power, and have the ecconomy of a diesil.

the 1.6 TDCi focus is one of the best. - Ironicly, the 1.6 is faster than the 2.0l

p.s just thought i'd tell you if you have £475,000 there is a ferrari enzo in on the auto trader website :)  :S  heehee

Why pay £475,000 for a ferrari ENZO when you can get a Lamborgini diablo GTR GT Cup Spec Racing car thats faster, a dam sight better looking and much much more of a beast for £25,000 more! (im sure if you can afford 475,000 -25,000 extra is pocket money!)

Or u could get the Cheaper Diablo models (2001 Sv or VT)for £90,000 each (2nd hand) or even a 2nd hand Mucialigo for £115,000 -for 475,000 you could have 4 Diablos and 1 mercialigo ! Or 2 diablos and a Nice house!

This guy speaks wize words :)

You can beat a good old Ford Fiesta for a cheap first car :) Or if your spending a bit more you can get a pretty good focus for arround £3k
