Pitbull_Rider
If its underpowered, then theres probably a hole in the exaust system somewhere. I had a similar but not as bad a problem as yours sounds and there was a hole in mine and mine was underpowered. I'm no car expert, but this is what i did with mine; what you might be able to do to check if its a hole is just get someone to put their hand over the exaust, sealing it completely, and holding it there for a second (when youve just started up the car for the first time when its cold obviously (Y) ) and listen for any noises coming from under the engine area or anywhere else. Hope this helps Ross
Matt_Tupman
Well to me it sounds as if the automatic choke is staying on to long :) but I haven't had much experience with these cars so can't be sure You could also jake it up and the start it to see if the exhaust is blowing from anywhere (Y)
inzane_2
all these answers sound werid, take it to a sodding garage again!(Y) make sure u stay well within the speed limit aswell! lol
endofreak
Are there many miles on the car? The Catalytic converter could be getting blocked and may need replaced. In Northern Ireland we don't yet test for emission levels at MOT. So when the Cat get's blocked you can simply knock all the Honeycomb type material out of the inside. The MOT rules are due to change very soon though. (Y)
Brisa
You sure steve? Our car has been probed a few times at MOT... Open the bonnet and get someone to rev, check if there is any un necessary movment in the engine. If not look down by the manifold and see if everything there is light and still in one piece (don't touch, fookin warm!) Get the car started and get someone to pump the accelerator quite lightly and listen under the car, if its a blow out you will hear it. love_trials
from what you have said about it sounding loud and feeling underpowered, it sounds to me like you have a hole somewhere in your exhaust, more than likely it will be nearer to the engine than the back box, because if there is a hole there will be no back pressure for the engine so it will feel underpowered. the best thing ot do will be take it to a garage. you could look and find the hole your self and when you find it you can buy a tube of exhaust weld, you just squeeze it on the hole and probem solved............... for a little while. if it is as underpowered as you are making out, then the hole should be quite big and easy to find. just lift the bonnet and rev the engine you should be able to roughly determine where the hole is by listening for the noise. let us know how you get on..... The tests they are doing at the minute are the same for cars with or without cats, but in the future the test will be slightly stricter for car that are supposed to have cats fitted. Brisa
Well I know Neil and a lot of other people rip off thier de-cat pipes and stick thier cat back on before mot. Did you get probed?

Did you get probed? ← When I was doing car electrics we used to knock out the insides of the cats as a quick fix for customers and their car's passed fine. They were probing back then also. I did indeed get probed. The car flew through and then got failed at the end for having one tyre ever so slightly under the limit.
Joe Papasnap Maher
Right...the noise isnt paticually loud...but underpowered yes...but as i say go 100 meteres down the road and it will be fine (Y) ??
trials_pimp
Well to me it sounds as if the automatic choke is staying on to long Thats the funniest thing I have hear all day............... 1st thing to check is air filter, make sure it isnt blocked. Sounds Like your catalytic Converter may be blocked, or maybe even colapsed inside. A sure fire way of finding out, jack the car up, remove the exhaut from the cat back, start it up, and see if it revs any better. OK it will be loud, but bear with it. If there is no change then the problem lies elsewhere, and will need to be better looked at, theres not alot I can do without the car infront of me.
