Drug/chemical Testing On Spiders

Nasa scientists have discovered that by giving spiders certain drugs they are able to calculate the toxicity of the drug and relate this to the effect likely to occur to a human (this could be used for all manner of chemicals).

Different drugs alter the architecture of the web spun by a normal house spider in various ways - this is very interesting and you can really spot the similarities to humans on the drugs covered.

Spiders on marijuana are too laid back to finish the job and just give up half way through. Those given the sedative chloral hydrate drop off before they can lay down more than a couple patches of web. When given an "upper", like the amphetamine Benzedrine, the spider demonstrates a gung ho approach but not much planning, leaving large holes in the structure! Jitters caused by caffeine turn webs into a bizarre bitty web...

The deformity in the web is directly related to the toxicity and dose of the chemical. Using a computer program, a Nasa team analysed the alterations in the web and think it will be possible to create a formula to measure toxicity.

The team found that one of the most telling measures of toxicity was a decrease in the numbers of completed sides in the cells within a web. The greater the toxicity, the more sides that the spider fails to complete.

The spider could then offer an alternative to testing on mammals.

Hmmm hate to piss on anyone's fire, but I think that if one didn't want to test drugs on mammals testing them on invertebrates is wrong.

It's like saying "we don't want to test X on a black man, but we can do it on white people, because they react the same way"

Tis discriminiation, equal rights to the spiders (Y)

PS

Ad's I doubt they gave the spider a bong, but they could have hotboxed it I guess, my guess would be an intravenous injection.

lmfao hotboxed it would probaly die

they extract the THC and CBD the active ingredients in weed and set the dosage it was probaly consumed by eating it but still it doesnt prove anything apart from getting stoned makes you do nothing but they could of just asked a stoner (Y) but its a interesting experiment

I wonder of they they could like program to make fishing nets and things like that. They woulnd't need paying much to do their job.

hehe, you'd have to some how put a ball of string inside the spider though!

Or maybe programme it to make it's web 10 times thicker (Y) (Y)

Hate to piss on your fire or to offend you but I really get pissed off when people bitch about testing on animals etc.

Sure animals is very cruel and it's terrible what's done to them but how else will they test these things?

Now by doing it to insects I don't really see a problem, I mean they aren't REALLY that intelligent and I'm sure they loved all the drugs!

Seriously though, it's all very well and good when 'do-gooders' come along and say it shouldn't be allowed etc etc but are you going to stand up and offer your services when they decide to test them on humans? Bollocks you are!

People talk big about shit but nobody's prepared to stand up and do something about it.

I can guarantee if a big enough group of people banded together and stood up to the government saying "We want to be tested on" the government would say 'Sure' go for it. But you're not going to are you?

Hehe, I actually agree with you there, I'm no animal rights freak.

Playing devil's advocate there for a second.

And your right, people do talk big and do nowt, but that sir is waht people do. (Y)

EDIT

Also, see that caffeine one, it's not true. My Dads a mathematician, and without coffee he don't work. (Y)" :P

I could be persuaded to for a lot of money though. Medeval (Y)
