george_seamons
You'll find that it swells like a mofo in the morning. In a couple of days it will go purple, and generally bruise t'fook. I've done it several times. The pain is unbelievable. It still hurts now if I lean it to a certain angle >_<

Sam Nichols
Having had quite a lot of experience with dodgy ankles over the years I might be able to help :shifty: The first thing is that, since you need to ask whether it could be broken... It definetly isn't. Trust me, you'd know about it (Y) What you have done is a nasty sprain, possiblly damaging the ligaments... But doubtful. From what you said, it's basically just a sprain, and the swelling isn't actually that bad at all, so don't worry  Treatment Get away from the computer and plonk yourself infront of the television, then get your ankle high to reduce swelling and put an ice pack or some frozen peas (wrapped in a towel) on it every 1-2 hours for 15 mins. REST - Don't walk on it or anything ICE - Every hour for 15mins to begin with, then go to every 2 hours for 15mins COMPRESSION - When using the ice, keep it firmly held against the swelling ELEVATION - keep it up high on a pillow Edited April 24, 2005 by nichols_sam
motocrossmumford
it could be a small break though because when i broke my leg it took quite a few hours to go black. i would definetly go to a+e straight away. did it hurt when you did it though. Tomm
So what's the difference between ligament damage and a sprain then? (Y) Anyway, if you can walk on it, it's almost certainly not broken. But it'd still be worth going to the Doc's anyway to give it the once over. He/she'll most likely just say RICE (See above), but they'll be able to tell you if it's broken in no time. Sam Nichols
hehe, you're right Tomm I didn't quite word that right... A sprain can be muscular OR to do with ligaments. So basically what I meant to say is that it's either the muscles or the ligaments. My bet is on the ligaments (Y) Bare in mind if you damage your ligaments it's going to take longer to FULLY heal than a broken bone. So make sure you do RICE and look after it really well AS SOON AS POSSIBLE to prevent any further damage to the raw tissue/ligaments/muscle/whatever. Sam Nichols
The ligaments in your foot aren't meant to move laterally Tomm. If his ankle twisted underneath him, the ligaments ould have either been torn or damaged in some way.
Tomm
Well, yes they are to some extent, otherwise you wouldn't be able to move your foot inwards and outwards. But you might be right. I thought ankle sprains were tendons damage, but apparently not...
Sam Nichols
Tendom damage is linked to a severe sprain or other similar trauma. So basically it's all traced back to a sprain! (Y) Shall we just say he's sprained his ankle? Seems the simplest choice to me, since all of the different things mentioned that could have happened to his ankle are linked to a sprain in one way or another! You've sprained your ankle (Y)
Tomm
I just looked it up and sprains = ligaments. And I guess you can get tendon damage at the same time.
Sam Nichols
Not just ligaments... muscles too. But yeah a sprain does and can include either tendon, muscle or ligaments (Y)
